• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Essential F3 Modifications and Farkles

Hello, all. I am considering purchasing an F3 and have learned a lot hanging out here so thanks, everyone. As part of the process, I am trying to figure out what is the best configuration for the machine and, therefore, what my costs will be.

Transmission-wise (manual vs. semi-automatic) I figure it is personal preference and, perhaps,it will impact resale value.

As for the S package, I do want cruise control but have read about replacing only the right hand switch housing to get the cruise control. I also have no idea if the S seat changes anything except the cosmetics. I have identified Ultimate, Corbin and a few others for seats/backrests and there is always the option of riding up to Bill Mayer or Russell. There was also one post about the difference in the grab bars near the instrument cluster. The wheels are different as are the color schemes and fender. Any help figuring out S vs non S is appreciated.

A windscreen seems like a good ideal to me and there are several to choose from. Again, any help would be useful.

Floorboards, bags, LEDs, etc. = personal preference/costs issues only unless there are lurking performance issues.

As far as handling, I have read about the BajaRon sway bars and links but have seen only one post regarding those on an F3. I do not know if it helps as much given the F3's different setup and ergonomics. And, my but those Elka shocks are expensive. Worth it? Better alternatives?

I am pretty well set with RAM Mount pieces for GPS, phone, etc. but, perhaps there are better ways to go. I did see posts about handle bar blocks with mounting holes (e.g., Lamonster) but do not know enough about the layout of the cockpit to know if that route makes sense.

Anything else I need to know? Any and all help is appreciated. Sorry for the rambling post.

I have the F3 SM6 and absolutely love it. But like all of my other Spyders, my only must have when purchasing is a backrest, I dont always carry a passenger, but I like to have it in the event of someone wanting to come for a ride.
When it comes to other farkles etc... my theory is, ride it and then decide what you need to make it fit you and what you want.
Since getting mine, I have moved the pegs forward to position 4 and changed the handlebars to the Attitude bars, which are a lot shorter and fit me nicely. Also added the gauge spoiler, for purely cosmetic reasons. No doubt there will be other things along the way, but only when I have decided that they will improve my ride.

Thanks for your thoughts, Colin. I have been looking at the Smoothspyder adjustable backrest. It looks like a nice piece of kit.

Add the bumpskid.... I have the lighted version and it has saved the paint a couple times already.

I would also get the belt tensioner from Baker's

If you ride two up, are close to average weight or God forbid overweight, replace the crap rear shock with a custom built Elka shock. The oem shock only has a 160 lb spring
and when you add your weight to the weight of the bike, you quickly overload it

Yes the cruise control can be added to the base model.

There is no difference between the base seat and the S seat other than the red stitching and smooth vs matte finish vinyl.

There are color choice differences in both body and frame between the two.

There are a few other differences between the base and S model. Trim, gauge cluster mount etc.

Everything else is add ons that can be done after purchase just as easily.

I had three essential mods that I wanted to do to my F3 as soon as practical - should have waited on windshield (wasted $400). Ist: greater visibility to cagers - added bright led front/back fender running lights and top case brake/signal/running lights. 2nd Luggage: GIVI 3rd windshield - purchased only available at the time blue ridge which is a major disappointment both in mounting system as well as shield itself - basically is a bug catcher for now - still working on a better solution.

I hate my blue ridge as well
