ER Visit Last Night

A purchased my first Spyder this month and end up in the emergency room last night after riding it for the second time. On the first ride out, once I had the spyder in 4th gear it started veering to the right while I was riding on a straight highway. I was not going over 50 mph and I was not turning a curve. At that time I was able to steer it back on the highway. But last night out on my second ride, again going straight down the highway, the spdyer veered a sharp right and took me down a ditch and I was thrown off. I was taken to the ER to make sure that nothing was broken. This morning I am bruised and sore and thank the Dear Lord no broken bones. So please give me some advice because I don't want to get back on the Spyder again. I have read the owner's manual and I am following the Do's and Don't list from here but something is not right. I have ridden a motorcycle for the past 8 years with no problems. So all advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!

 Glad to hear that you're going to be okay!
What did your dealer say, after the first episode? :dontknow:
(You DID have the bike checked out; didn't you?)

Don't know what to tell you.:dontknow: , but glad you're ok. I find that the Spyder is particularly sensitive to road crowns even when set up correctly. The roads around here are usually crowned to the right to promote drainage, so it's not uncommon for me to have the bike tend to veer to the right and for me to have to compensate for that. My suggestion is to carefully ride it to a flat parking lot and see if it veers on that. If not, the bike is set up right and it might have been the road condition that caused it. If it still veers to the right, then something is wrong.

Happy that your injuries are relatively minor.

If it is a constant "pull" to the right it might be low air pressure in the right tire. If it is a sudden "veer" or turn to the right it sounds like a steering issue.

prior to taking it on the highway did you take some local rides to get used to the way the Spyder handles? It took me a while to be able to smoothly control it.

so sorry to hear this but glad it is only a few bruises and pains, wow wonder what could of causes the bike to veer right.

Glad you are relatively okay.

Like Roger said, it could be the DPS, and to have it towed to the dealer. The 2008 and 2009 spyders had a DPS recall where the DPS was replaced. What year spyder do you have?

I'd be trailering or having it towed to a dealer immediately to be checked out. If there are no issues with the Spyder itself id suggest taking it and yourself to a 3W trike motorcycle safety class to get some time of it in a safe environment where they may be able to help guide you if it continues to veer to the right on how or when to compensate. Also other suggestions about checking tire pressure and going back to look at road crown are good as well.

Since they still have mechanical steering, I would suspect tire pressure coupled with road conditions like a rut or groove or as previously suggested, crown.

There are a couple of spots around town here that will grab the wheels and throw you around pretty good if you aren't prepared for it.

The Spyders to take more arm muscle to steer than a typical 2 wheeler. Might just need some additional controlled situation riding like a big empty lot to get used to the different riding method and unlearn the 2 wheeler muscle memory.

Although possible, I would not expect the DPS to just suddenly take over the steering and force it in one direction or another. Anything is possible though and the dealer certainly will need to go through it to make sure everything is alright and nothing else got out of whack when it let the road.

Glad to hear you are ok and I hope you give it a try again after the bike is diagnosed and fixed if needed.

So glad your ok. Now it's time to get it to a dealer. And trailer it! Tom :trike:

Just a thought. Possibility of the right tire going off the road catching the lip of the asphalt causing loss of steering. If you're not used to the two front wheels being out there you could unconsciously let the tire drift off to the right. I had the opposite problem when I first started driving the Spyder. I unconsciously let the left tire drift over the centerline.

If, these words are a literal representation of fact

"going straight down the highway, the spdyer veered a sharp right and took me down a ditch and I was thrown off."

As has been said. It needs to be transported to a reputable dealer to be inspected.

First off, I'm glad you were not hurt badly other than a few scraps. Would be nice to know what year and model your Spyder is. But like everyone has said, the bike needs to be taken to your dealer to see if there is a problem or not.

Yikes..!!

really sorry this happened but glad you are basicly alright. Could speculate... but agree you should have the roadster checked out at the dealer. They need to check for codes and all steering components. Hope you heal quickly....and the cause is found..

I don't see what spyder you have. The 2013 RT's had ball joint problems when they first came out - they were too tight and had to be replaced. It caused similar problems to what you describe. But again I don't see what you have.

All good advice above. Glad that you came out of this all right.

We do need a lot more information concerning the incident.

An examination of the :spyder2: by a competent dealer is recommended. The problem could easily be vehicle related or driver related. It is much to early to make a determination IMO.

Per prior posts: 2013 ST-LTD. Given lots of advice about driving the new Spyder, in relation to two wheelers. Recommend looking at prior 10 posts.
