• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

English is hard

Ben Franklin had the right idea suggesting that our national language should have been German. Germans don't need spelling lessons because their words always are pronounced exactly as spelled (except those bastardized English imports). They do wind up with some very long words that we would call sentences however. Besides, German is the language of science and is too close to the metric system for the average American to figure out - even though our money is a metric system and we don't seem to have a problem with that.

It could have been French as French was once the language of diplomacy. Now days diplomats just swear at each other in English. You can even make up new words if you are swearing over the Internet.

I doubt it would have worked because there were too many immigrants each having their native languages to add to the mix. It was much easier to just incorporate foreign language words into our American English and tell the Brits to go pound sand. It is somewhat embarrassing that the average British schoolchild can speak much better English than 98% of all Americans (not counting El Presidente of course since he is totally not understandable and is lying anyway).

Besides.....without American English why would be need the National Spelling Bee - won year after year by various Asian kids who learned it as a second language.
 
Many years ago I worked for a German company. They cussed in English. I ask them why and if they didn’t having good cuss words in German? :roflblack:

Germans create new words by adding together root words. This sometimes results in a very long single word. If that were a cuss word, by the time the speaker finished saying it.....they would likely have forgotten what they were cussing about.

I was talking to our pastor one time about swearing. He is Italian heritage. He admitted to swearing once in a while, but he always does it in Italian. Then he remembers, God understands Italian also! :roflblack:
 
What I love most about that very clever presentation is that the guy was 102 years old when he filmed it! He sure doesn't sound or look it!

  • At a meeting, why does a topic come UP?
  • Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report?
  • We call UP our friends.
  • And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver; we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen.
  • We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car.
  • At other times the little word has real special meaning.
  • People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.
  • To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special.
  • A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP.
  • We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.
  • We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP!
  • To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP look the word UP in the dictionary.
  • In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions.
  • If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used.
  • It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.
  • When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP.

An addition: Why is it called a 'Hot water heater'? Hot water doesn't need heating.
