Driver back rest

I am considering the purchase of a BRP comfort seat for my 2014 RTL. My question is; will the driver back rest from my standard seat work on the comfort seat? I would like to get the opinion of others as to rather the comfort seat is worth the investment. I am 6'5" tall with a 36" inseam. Currently, when I ride, my toes are at the forward most part of the floor boards and my knees are bent slightly toward the rear. This position is not painfully uncomfortable, but I could use a little more room. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The standard OEM backrest will not fit the optional comfort seat. It uses a different mounting bracket and the insert pegs are shorter in the comfort seat backrest. BRP is making an adjustable drivers backrest for both the OEM and the optional comfort seat that should be out in December and so does Utopia. I had the BRP comfort seat and loved it. Unfortunately, my passenger didn't like it so I sold it and went back to the OEM seat.

Had the BRP comfort seat and backrest on my 2014 RTL when I bought it,dealer installed it before pickup.Drove it home 60 miles and didn't care for the backrest.Removed it and drove 130 miles to bike week O.C Maryland and didn't care for the comfort seat.Bought a ultimate tallboy at bike week and love it with the drivers backrest,I am 6'4" with a 36inch inseam and it works for me.

You may want to consider a set of highway pegs to stretch out your legs. I have Rivco's and really like them.

Thanks

I installed the Rivco highway pegs and I am still getting used to them. Thank you for the feedback on the seat/backrest.

Comfort Seat Was Good Investment for Me

I have a 2013 RT - the last year before they came out with the OEM backrest in 2014. I am 6'3" with 32" inseam, and the standard seat made my knees bend too much. The OEM comfort seat set me back an additional 2" on the seat and made a huge difference in riding comfort for me. In 2014 they improved the comfort seat and actually made it more comfortable, so now it should be even better. I sat on one at a dealer and it seemed more comfortable than mine.

At SpyderQuest this year, I tried an Ultimate Tall Boy seat. It gives you 1.5" more room. It was comfortable to sit on, but was worse than the OEM comfort seat for my leg position.

If you don't want to spend the big bucks for a custom seat (which may give you both leg room and comfort), my advise would be to get an OEM comfort seat for your 2014. If you find that you need even more comfort for your butt, you can always get an AirHawk R air cushion. I like mine, but over this winter, I am going to insert one of Motorcycle Dave's gel pads into my seat. Hopefully that will allow me to get rid of the air cushion.

As for the backrest, as Steve posted above, they are not interchangeable. Since there is no backrest for the 2013 seats, I opted for the Utopia Backrest, and I love it. (I've included a picture.) You would have a choice of a new OEM backrest, or an aftermarket backrest like the Utopia, which costs less, and many folks find to be much better.

Rob,

How much space is there between the Utopia backrest and the passenger backrest? Passenger space is a concern for us, and is what has held me back from ordering the comfort seat.

All I would have to do is order the bracket for the comfort seat from Bob at Utopia, and I would be all set...... if this is workable.

I posted a similar question to you in another thread, so I apologize for the redundancy.

The BRP comfort seat is a good choice if you are looking to upgrade the comfort level of the seat.

It is less mushy than the OEM. I have now had three. One on my 2009, one on the 2011, and the latest on the 2014. The 2014 version is the best of the three.

There does seem to be an issue with the OEM backrest not fitting in the comfort seat hole. I had a Utopia on my OEM 2014 and it would not fit on the Comfort version. I have found that riding without the backrest is now okay for me. The set back and slightly higher back part of the drivers position works very well--for me.

You would think that BRP would make stuff like the back rest be universal fit on their line of seats. No way would I buy another expensive back rest and play that game.

Back rest for RT

I bought a comfort seat from another member here. I already had the backrest. I was able to insert and lock back rest on the comfort seat just as easy as with the OEM seat.

Dwayne,

To make the Utopia backrest fit the comfort seat, all you need to do is order a different size T-bracket from Utopia. I know that because they originally sent me a bracket for the standard seat and then changed it out for me.

Pam,

With the Utopia backrest on the comfort seat there is admittedly not much room for the passenger. It's been posted a few times that the OEM backrest does seem to offer a little more room for the passenger. As I suggested in my reply in the other thread, you may be able to get around this by making the passenger backrest a bit thinner. It is awfully thick, as it comes from the factory.

You'd have to cut some foam out of it and re-upholster it. It wouldn't be hard to do with the proper tools. Or better yet, take it to an auto upholstery guy. Should be a relatively inexpensive job.

This winter I am going to open up my seat and install one of Motorcycle Dave's foam/gel pad. While doing that, I'm also thinking of taking it to an upholstery guy to move the driver position a bit further back, since I do not carry passengers. Should be an easy alternation and not too expensive. Should be able to re-install the same cover if alterations are not that great.

Thanks for the info. I liked the new comfort seat set up so much, I sold the Utopia to another member. All is well.
