DPS recall ==> Service Department scam?

I just called into the service department of my spyder dealer, Motorcycle Mall in Belleville NJ to schedule my 3000m service and my dps recall. They told me that the dps is not in stock and can't be placed in stock, and has to be pulled from my SE5 and sent back to factory who would send him a replacement, which could take days or weeks.

Not only did the service department tell me they had no choice on this process, but when I told them just to give me the 3000m service and skip the recall for now not wanting my spyder to be in the shop for an unspecificed period of time now that spring is here the service manager said that was not possible because it was a "safety recall".

So, I just hung up the phone... Anyone in NJ/NY/CT area have similar problems?

They're wrong. They can have DPS units in stock--- every dealer was allotted a certain amount-- and as they change them they send them in and get new ones--- but they should have started our with 1/2 dozen or so depending on their volume.

I would question their ability to do the DPS if they are this clueless-- ask them how many they have done. I would find a dealer that has done a bunch of them-- don't want the learning how to do it on your Spyder!

The 3,000 mile is just basically oil and lube---- save some $$ and do it yourself.

There appears to be some confusion. The dealer cannot order the DPS units for stock, but he should have been auto-shipped DPS units for 10% of the Spyders he had sold. When those are replaced, and he sends in the old ones, and he will automatically be shipped new replacements. He is not supposed to take yours out and send it in, while he waits for a replacement unit. He is also not supposed to "confiscate" your Spyder, and hold it, awaiting repairs. That is illegal. A new dealer, that had not sold any Spyders before the recall was issued last Fall, could have trouble obtaining DPS units. As was said previously, I would get Carlo involved, to explain BRP's policy to the dealer, and perhaps expedite a DPS unit for you.

Unfortunately, with the DPS unit allocation to dealerships, it's FEAST or FAMINE.

Some dealerships have five or less in rotation, only able to get a new unit when the old/defective unit is shipped back to the factory. So they spend most of their time "waiting" for the next delivery of fresh DPS units.

Other dealerships have excess inventory, which cannot be returned or shipped to another dealer. So they are stuck with the "glut" of DPS units taking up space on their parts shelves.

You need to find a dealer with "glut." Chances are they can get you in and replace the unit while you wait.

Good luck...

I find it hard to believe that for a safety recall there are still people waiting on DPS units 7-8 months after the start of recalls.:dontknow:

Based on what I am reading--direct contact with BRP through the customer representative is the best action for finding out what is going on. It would be great to hear back about what you found out. Also, based on what I am hearing, the dealer does not sound like they are being honest, or--it might be a ploy to get you to go elsewhere because they don't want to deal with warranty issues. Bottom line--the dealer does not sound like they are very customer friendly.

:hun:I was told by my dealer that my RT could not leave the lot (purchased November 2010) until the DPS was replaced. He said that there was always a DPS in stock and as soon as a customer came in to get it replaced he'd order 2 more with no issues from BRP.

Sound like your dealer needs to get their :cus: straight....

The dealer that did my DPS is new enough that they are still in the process of setting up their parts stock. Mine was the first they worked on; they got the serial number, contacted BRP, and called me when the new unit came in. I did NOT have to leave it. Had a slight problem right after I got it back, but it took minutes for them to take care of it.

my dealership went out of business before I had the recall done.... now it's like pulling sharks teeth to find another dealer who will/can do it.

I have spoken to the dealer you mentioned. Found them not very helpful last season when the re-call was issued.

Don't know if this dealer is too far but...
You might try the dealer in Queens, NY: Cross Bay Honda Suzuki 718-738-7618. I have found the service department to be excellent. CrossBay did my recall, same day no problems in July. You will need an appointment.

DPS recall

Since the dealership where my :spyder2: originated went out of business, I wonder how I go about finding out if my DPS recall was done. Anybody have any suggestions? The man I purchased it from is pretty hard to get a hold of it seems:gaah:

Sunshyn,
I think that if you go to any dealer, they can run your bike's VIN to see what has been done to to it as far as recalls and service bulletins...
Wannabegood,
Others have said it... Your guy is either full of it or just ignorant... your choice! :gaah:
