• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

DPS question

My 2008 RS SE 5 has been acting a little weird in turns, seems like DPS stops assisting prematurely, it gets harder to turn all of a sudden during the turn, usually happens when I have to make a 90 degree left or right turn. Seems OK on lane changes and small turns. I tried to pull the codes "no active codes", battery is new, connections are tight. Took it to the dealer, 2 weeks after they came up with a low tire pressure, no codes, they said they checked everything. They put some air in my tires but that did not really fix anything. The bike is fine as I start the turn but when I am about 1/2 way thru the turn I have to put extra force on the handlebars.
Thank you for your input and Happy Thanksgiving!!

it's possible the DPS is beginning to fail. The dealer can test the DPS with BUDS and with checking current through the switches. It may also be in the steering sensor.

All the way from NZ. My similar model had the same problem. Firstly check the wheel alignment. Mine was diagnosed by service agent to be steering position sensor which was replaced and now all better Good Luck.

Curious..!!

did you have any front end work done..?? Alignment tire changes/rotation etc..?? Like Yogi stated your steering position sensor could be off. Tire pressure would cause problems all the time. Dps could be going out...

No front end work. Wouldn't BUDS show steering sensor problem? The dealer checked it with BUDS and all was OK ( so they said)

Did they detect with BUDS? How much did it run you to replace the sensor?

Does that mean that you never had the DPS replaced under recall? :dontknow:
Time to get that bike to the dealer...

Sounds a lot like what I experienced in September. I posted about it here: http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?72300-DPS-crapping-out!

I had a code only once as I recall, and that was after a hard fast turn into a parking spot, which cleared after turning ignition off. That's the only one that showed up in BUDS. Have the tech reset the torque sensor. If it loses the correct turning angle setting for straight ahead it can cause the problem you're having. This is different from the steering angle sensor. Somewhat of a long shot I think, but that's what the tech did on my bike before he concluded the DPS was screwy.

If it is the DPS get ready to spend a bunch, or figure out how to change it yourself. My changeout would have cost something like $1500, parts and labor. The DPS unit is something like $800. This might be a good time to check out motorcycle salvage yards, local or online. Spyders do get wrecked so there very well may be a used one out there somewhere.

Yes BUDs detected. Quoted by NZ service agent $1080 for new part.:yikes:

I located byway of web this place in US where I purchased from my self for $288.37. Good people, fast service, the link to their site, www.powersportswarehouse.com .I have consequently made other purchases from them.

Wish I'd known about them last year when we were over there doing the Route 66 thing.

Good luck and Cheers from NZ.

Summer and fantastic touring down here.

No, DPS was done with the recall campaign years ago, I meant no alignment, sway bar any anything like that

Thank you, I will ride it and see what happens, I have my eye on the F3, loved the demo ride at the show.

:D I hoped that you would say that...
How old is your Battery?
The DPS is the single-largest user of electricity on the bike...
If the Battery is starting to get a bit... tired; it may manifest itself in how the DPS works first...
It's worth a test... a LOAD test!

The battery is new, may be 6 mo old, Got it from the dealer, installed myself, I also put a tender on it, may be the tender wires make the contact points not work well? I will try to do the load test,
Thank you

Quick update.
Removed the battery tender, cleaned the terminals, took it for a ride, no steering problems,. I am impressed, who would have thought. We are blessed to have this forum.
Thank you everybody!

:congrats: While you're out there; take a ride for me!! :2thumbs:
25 degrees, and the roads are sloppy here...
