• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

DPS Mileage

Mine went at a little past 19,5k and the new DPS, just under 1 tank full of gas in the twisties.

Yes, I too would hear this audible "POP" and the errors would start scrolling and then into "Limp Home Mode". This i could hear just sitting at a stop light and turning the bars very slightly (left to right) when you feel its trying to assist..you feel this "pop" thru the bars...

Mine is a 2009 SM5 and it first started having steering issues around 5000 miles. I took it in to have the recall done, and it handled better than it ever did. It felt like I did not have power steering before the update. It worked good, but occasionaly the steering would still lock up. It was like the handlebars were locked and you could not turn them. I would push on the bars trying to turn, but nothing doing. Then when it finally broke loose you would here a snap ...<snip>. .

What percentage of spyders owners have had the steering issues would you guess? I am just wondering if it's allot or if it just seems like allot because it's on this board?

When it does happen can you steer through it or is it just locked?:dontknow:

I just went out and ran the spyder for a few minutes yesterday and it sounds so sweet. I can't wait for spring! :2thumbs:

Only a fraction of Spyder owners frequent online forums. It's probably impossible to know what the actual percentage of owners having problems is. It is probably a small number, but would seem to be growing.

There is more than one type of steering malfunction experienced by owners. Not all have had the "lock up" problem. In my case the steering, with no warning, just decided to make a sharp left into and across the opposing traffic lane. If I could pick the "problem" before hand, I'd much rather experience a lock up than what my Spyder did.

I have had the problem three times and I forget the mileage of each but my first was pretty early on. The last was today after 37,000. It had been good for about 10,000 miles but it is back again. I am pulling the fuse and seeing if I can live with it that way. Otherwise it is adios.

That would be way not cool! :yikes: Were you able to correct quickly. How fast were you going.

It happened while riding on a straight and level highway at around 50mph. I was able to correct and get back into my lane but would not have been so lucky if there was any reaffic going in the other direction. It happened 2x and I believe I was the first to report any of the steering problems. Off the top of my head, I think the incidents took place took place back in September 2008. I have to dig up my original post to check on the date. I think the heading was "Is My Spyder Trying to kill Me?" or something similiar.

Note; Found the thread I started concerning the steering issue...it was on October 21, 2008. Feel free to take a look at it.

Mine never worked right out of the box. I guess the "Tech" did not notice I had no power steering when he test rode it before I took delivery.

I put 7,600 miles on it that way until one day I left it sitting at Lamont's house. He had his Spyder torn down (so what's new) and wanted to go to town. He jumped on my Spyder and thought I had a flat front tire.

After checking tire pressures (they were fine) he decided my PS was out. He called me and told me. I went over and rode it and there was absolutely no difference in steering so we knew I never had it. I guess it's one of those "What you don't know won't hurt you" events.

After the dealer tried this and that with no improvement they replaced the DPS unit and I've been fine ever since. Huge difference! 8,000 miles on the new unit and no problems.
