On the way back toward home yesterday afternoon, we were traveling Hwy 7 to Hwy 57. This is where 57 ends going east. At this point, lies the historic old town of LaGrange. We turned, heading west. About a mile away is the flashing light where an intersection is where we go right (north), and begin a beautiful ride through the country up to Somerville.
Well; I'm shifting down to prepare for our turn. And, I think, I was in 2nd gear. I could have been going 15mph (not sure); probably less. For a split second, I glanced to the right, preparing for my turn. And, then, it happened. I hit something. The dog was probably a 35-45lb mix. He struck the Spyder between the nose and the left front wheel. I immediately stopped, as the dog limped away.
He was fine, thankfully. I got off the Spyder in partial shock. I could not believe what had just happened. And, I was mad! First, I was mad at myself for somehow not seeing the dog. And, then I was mad because, what the hell was the dog doing playing in the road?
I looked the Spyder over. It looked okay. The boy playing with the dog told us that he was playing frisbee with the dog in the yard south of the road. And, the dog began shaking his head with the frisbee in his mouth, and it went flying into the middle of the road, where he preceded to chase it. As I said, the dog was okay. Of course, I felt bad. And, the next thing we knew, his limp was gone too. All was good.
After a couple of minutes, we got back on, and started our ride home. I was pretty shaken, and thankful at the same time. Obviously, I am very glad we weren't going the full 40mph speed limit. It could have been bad.
We got home, and I washed the Spyder to get the bugs off, check it all over to make sure nothing had gotten broken, and get it ready for today's ride to Shelby Forest & Shake Rag. It's like there was no contact. Again; we were lucky. And, the dog and Spyder were lucky, too.
Take care everyone! And, please be careful while riding. Things can happen all too fast!
