• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Does anyone recommend using non ethenol gas?

I have a 2012 RSS SE5 with 21000 miles and was curious if non ethanol fuel would be better to use than premium 93?

You might've been better asking does anyone recommend using ethanol gas, cos the answer wouldn't be 'Yes' from too many, if from any at all!! The manual is pretty adamant that you NEVER use anything more than 10% Ethanol, if that!!

Same for using Premium fuel, not many use or recommend using anything much lower than 91 Octane (altho there a few that seem to use lower octane gas & get away with it - altho maybe the next owner of that Spyder won't appreciate that....) & the BRP manual directs you to use 91 Octane gas as a minimum....

So it's pretty clear that as others have already said, most (including BRP) recommend using Low or NON ethanol gas & Premium or at least something of 91 octane or higher at that!!

Follow the recommendations in your owners manual. The engine in your 2012 RS does not need fuel with an octane rating greater than 87. Filling with fuel with a greater octane rating will not cause any harm, but will absolutely not give you any benefit. I use 91 octane in my Spyder because that is required for my engine, which is different than yours and it makes a difference.

From page 26 in your owners manual.

Non Ethanol Gas

Non ethanol is all we run, except for the occasional tank where the only available is 10% ethanol. We have a farm and have the "pure gas" delivered to our 300 Gallon tank on site. We tend to run with "plus" .... about half way between premium and regular (88 to 89 octane). I consistently get in excess of 32 miles per gallon on my Spyder and have even topped 35 mpg a couple of times.

We are able to get the "pure gas" from the same distributor that delivers our dyed diesel (farm use only).

All the best ..... Ann

my rs se5 claims 87 octane is fine but i do usually fill up with 91 ethanol free.

Non Ethanol fuel is better for everything. And while the Spyder will run on Regular. It is actually designed to run best on Premium.

How the octane rating was explained to me: Higher octane fuels are more resistant to compression meaning they are less likely to cause predetonation. Certain "high compression" motors (like the 5.7l Hemi in my truck, or the 1000cc SDI twin in the latest Mach Z) require higher grade fuels. Fuel injection will retard the ignition if this becomes an issue though. Granted I am not a master mechanic, but that was what I was taught.

When it comes to ethanol this is what I know: First ethanol has nowhere near the explosive power that gasoline does, decreasing the power created inside the combustion chamber. Ethanol is also very hydrophylic making gasoline that contains ethanol more "eager" to draw moisture into the gasoline.
Ethanol causes issues inside the motors that newer cars are built to withstand. I do not know if the motors in spyders, snowmobiles, four wheelers, boats and motorcycles are designed with those issues in mind.

Again, I am not a master mechanic but these are things I have been taught and I am.......

Just sayin'................

:agree: sort of...
The earlier "Throttle by cable" RS and GS bikes were designed to run on 87 octane fuel.

I've got an 08 GS, It definitely runs better on premium.
