• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Does adding additional Brake Light void the factory warranty

All, when we picked up our Spyder (2011 RTS SE5) I inquired about having Tricplate brake lights and Trifenderz install by the dealership. What I was told surprised me, they said adding those lights would void my factory warranty. Is that true? I sure hope not the Sypder really needs some help to be seen from behind. Has anyone else been told this? I also have the BEST extended warranty.

100% BS.

There is nothing that will automatically just 'void' your warranty.

They would have to show that whatever mod you did actually caused a system failure and then they could deny THAT portion of your warranty. They cannot just void your warranty. We have laws in the US to protect us from this kind of thing.

Example 1:

You add the lights and then later on your engine blows. Totally un-related --- they cannot deny your engine coverage.

Example 2:

You add the lights and then have electrical problems that are determined to be cause by your modification. They may not cover your electrical problems that are related to that system.

Just make sure you use quality parts from a reputable supplier - and make things easy to reverse should the need arise........

:agree:Firefly is right on. Sounds like your dealer does not want to do an install job. I would go to a dealer that wants my business.

Dealers ALWAYS try to blame whatever problem on the accessories. After the 2nd SW update which fubared the fuel programming, I had one try to tell me the backfiring / popping and bogging at 4K rpm has something to do with the mud flap lights I installed. I told them one more stupid comment like that I'll take my business else where.:spyder:

Most dealers will install accessories as long as they get their $$$. However, when it comes to OEM products, they would like you to buy it from them in case something happens they can go thru their channels to get a warranty replacement. If you buy an OEM thru someone else and something happens, you are responsible of contacting the vendor so THEY can get a warranty replacement (more work for you:lecturef_smilie:).

As far as non-OEM, like I said in my first sentence... But if they sell the accessory (or something similar) they might give you a hard time.:chill:

Firefly gave good advice. Federal law (the Magunuson-Moss Act) prohibits blanket voiding of warranties. I can respect a dealer not wanting to install aftermarket accessories, but he should just tell you he doesn't do it. If a dealer gave me this song-and-dance, I would find another dealer...permanently.

First; they can't void your warranty.:lecturef_smilie:
Second; They probably don't know how to do the install.:dontknow:

IMHO this issue does have BRP roots: if (sooner or later) the service is calling the Spyder Service Hotline for diagnostic within lights circuit, the answer would be to "remove any aftermarket product and call back".

Thank to all who provided feedback, Just as an FYI, all of our future brake system and turn light additions will now use an exact OEM harness. This new system will be plug and play. In the past we have used posi-taps which work great but having a factory look and a non evasive system will allow just about anyone to do an install pretty easily and quickly and it can be removed and factory system intact and untouched. Hope this helps. Thank you. RT

I added a tail light because my other one fell off. I should have went to the dealer and had it replaced. ( But I wanted to replace it anyway.) When I had my Spyder in for other service he never said anything about the non stock light. Anyway, here is what I found to replace it with.

I haven't had a single dealer say anything negative about my additional lighting mods, or the possibility of voiding the warranty. If I happen to ever have an electrical problem sometime, I am sure we will be able to work through it.

Hi Antelopespyder. That light seems to be clear white. If so, is'nt that going to blind the guy behind you? I'm not sure if you can flash a white light in the back of your ryde. Unless it's shining down. I could be wrong!!!:dontknow:

I did it the "old way" and with only a few abusive words between my aged fingers and the pos-taps, the install was easy. The look, great. I have the brake light and duo color fender lights. I talked to a Ohio State Trooper today (PGR Mission, not traffic stop) He liked both sets.

dealer upgrades

i know i am late to the party, but i just got my Spyder and so just joined the site tonight.
i asked my dealer before even talking Spyder prices "i assume you guys will install any aftermarket products i want as long as they are street legal?" and the answer was a resounding YES! sometimes you have to like a down economy because not only are they willing to do installs that might be too small when times are good, but they are willing to do discounts on parts AND labor!
Triangle Cycles, i love you! (the Durham, NC location, never been to the one in Virginia).

by the by, i am getting a 3rd brake light (set as flash/strobing for brakes), brightsides, mud flap lights, and upgrading the front fender lights to a 4 LED kit. dealer had NO qualms whatsoever about not only installing them, but actually getting new business accounts so they could order them for me
