Do you have power steering?

Are you sure? I know of three guys now that didn't know their power steering wasn't working till they rode another Spyder. Theirs didn't work from day one.

The strange thing is none of these are throwing any kind of fault code. :dontknow:

Wow these stories are starting to scare me :yikes: I guess that sick bay we saw at Homecoming is just for looks and they keep banging them out anyway:banghead:I'm starting to have second thoughts about my :spyder:of all the 16 or so H-D I owned I already had more parts replaced under warranty than all of them:mad:

First year vehicle issues. We've bought a couple of first year cars and they had similar "growing pains". I was plenty upset when I bought a new Envoy and for the first month, the dealer had it more than I did. They fixed the problems, GM upgraded or redesigned suspect parts and it turned out to be a decent vehicle. Hopefully the Spyder works out the same way.

My quick test for the power steering is to try turning the handlebars with the Spyder off and then starting the Spyder and turning the bars. It should be easier with the engine running.

:agree: I do this in the "pre-flight" every ride.

How can I tell if my power steering is working? Should I be able to turn the handlebars while standing still?

Good question how do you know? All I know is mine steers about the same as my 4-wheel drive 4 wheelers. Certainly could be easier for a street vehicle

Great post! Right after reading this yesterday afternoon, I did this quick test!

Thanks! :)

I did a quick comparison (engine on vs. engine off), and I can't tell any difference either... and I've had mine since Feb. On those who have had the issue, what was the problem... and the fix? Rather not waste a day at the dealer if I don't have to.

I've been wondering about my power steering for some time now. I have done the test many times, on starting the engine, and it does make a difference but it sure has a lot of bar pressure on curves when I'm riding.

Lamonster, I should have tried yours that day we rode Mt. Palomar. I haven't had another Spyder to compare to, so I don't know if my steering pressure is "normal" or not.

Maybe I'm just spoiled by my Yamaha TW200 conversion trikes, they have almost neutral (very little bar pressure) steering in all situations.

My power steering works intermittently and the bars will actually shake when it turns on and off. Going to dealer tomorrow to see what's up. It's been like that since day1. I'll report back on what they find.

My power steering has worked since day one... however. The other day I was on the hiway at 130 km/h when all of a sudden the bike jumped 2 feet to the right. From that point on I couldn't control it. Next day my tech looks at it... gear position sensor had failed. he replaced it. Now it works fine again.

Gear position sensor and power steering seem unrelated to me unless it caused an electrical issue that affected many electrical systems. Of course, I'm no Spyder tech so this is just my opinion.

The Spyder doesn't have true power steering, like a car. Its only a steering assist. I think its supposed to add more assist when moving at slow speeds and less assist when traveling at higher speeds. You should be able to turn the wheels with the Spyder parked but it will be harder than with it moving.

I remember meeting another Spyder couple (hi Joan and Bob!) back in the spring and they questioned whether their Spyder steering assist was working properly. While parked in the parking lot, I agreed that theirs did seem to turn harder than mine did. We swapped Spyders and once I got it out on the road, I could not notice any steering force difference from theirs, mine or my wife's Spyder.

A couple of ways to know better if your steering is OK is either to take it to the dealer and let them check it out or to swap rides with another Spyder owner who thinks their steering works good.

Gear position sensor needs to be replaced! If it did not come directly from BRP I would not have believed it. Have the dealer hookup the computer. If there is a gear position sensor error that is the problem with the power steering.

I'll believe it when this actually cures the problem. Keep us informed. Only possible connection is through the computer, which does change the steering response at different speeds, and maybe in different gears, if this is correct. Very interesting!

My headlights dim slightly when I turn the bars standing still with engine running. So I guess that the steering is using power:D
