Digital Gauges Question

OK, I am probably rehashing an old topic here but I have to ask. I have read a couple of different places on the board that if I disconnect my analog gauges I will get corresponding digital gauges on my display. Is this the case? The reason i ask is I was at my dealers yesterday and I asked the service manager about it and he told me he had never heard of this and doubted it was true. Now at this point I trust the people on here more than the dealer so can someone tell me if this is correct? Also, do I have to disconnect both gauges? Can I just disconnect the gas gauge and get a digital gas gauge? This is a great forum and I have learned alot about my bike and how to do mods and maintenance here.

Yes, it is true

Yes, this works. But, you have to unplug BOTH GAUGES, not just one or the other. I have done this on my 2010 RT-S & love it. The fuel gauge is much more stable & accurate than the analogue guage. They will appear to the sides of your digital display, where the volume for your radio shows will be the gas
reading, & if you have the RT-S with auto ride adjustment for the rear, that is where the temperature will show. They just toggle when you use the corresponding buttons, then go back to displaying your temp. On the left & gas on the right. I personally like the digital display much better, seems much more accurate, at least on my machine.

Me too. I love having them gone. Here's what I did in their place:

Thanks

Thank you for the prompt replies. I definitely want to replace one of them with a power outlet for my GPS.

I know several have replaced the temp guage with a Voltmeter..... how is this wired? It would be nice to if someone posted a Tutorial

The power to your GPS can be routed to the front fuse box by removing the small cover in the middle of your handlebars and running the wire thru it.

Adding a voltmeter is the most simple replacement you can do. After unplugging the temp gauge, the plug on the end of the bike wiring harness you will notice has about 4 wires on it. FROM THIS POINT ON, IT'S MEMORY- There should be 2 wires that are Orange/Red. They are slightly different thickness. Either of these should be your +12v. There is also a Grey or Black wire and this should be your GROUND.

On your new Voltmeter gauge there likely will be only 2 wires- one to +12v and one for ground. Hook those to the wires that we identified above. I left the old connector on the bike harness and 'plugged' in the wires from my new voltmeter and it worked 100%

Voltmeter

Phil

I fitted a voltmeter to a previous motorcycle BMW (Digital readout)
It needed 3 Wires 12v Pos - Ground and 1 From the lighting loom
(This would dim the gauge for night time use)

Could one of the other 2 wires be used for this as when the Spyder lights
come on as the gauge is lit up
Maybe the 4th wire is from the temp sensor if so - Which colour gives
the lighting function

I Suspect the Fuel gauge also has 4 wires
12v +
Ground
Lighting
Sensor for fuel level
Perhaps others will be able to confirm this and also confirm the colours

This forum is great for finding out information - Long may it continue

Yes, I'm sure the 4th goes to the sensors on both guages. I can see that on the schematric.

Good question on the lighting wire Eddie. Looking at the schematic, I can't tell (I'll try to look at it again tomorrow). BUT... if you have a cheap portable voltmeter hanging around, you might use it to look at the voltage on the 2 orange/red wires to see if anything changes with lights on or off. HEY.. use the new Voltmeter with a couple of temporaty jumpers! VERY low chance you'll hurt anything.

BTW- I know that Reading is way west of London, but my wife and I be in Islington for a week in April. JUST thinking ahead :)
