For those of you that may be thinking of doing something like this,
a Sportster muffler will work. Be aware that the newer ones have a
cat taking up about 2rds. of the baffle area of the muffler and is
substantially heavier. It will have 2 threaded lugs about mid way of
the muffler and makes mounting a lot easier. I was told that a
muffler should be mounted as close to the center line of the
attachment point as possible. Also, there will be a connection for
a cross over pipe that will need to be sealed. I used a steel freeze,
plug, seated it with a hammer against the stock gasket and then tapped
remaining flange over the freeze plug to lock it in place before I settled
on using the longer one. It goes without saying that opinions will vary
all over the place about why, where or WHAT! Each to his own.
