• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

As long as there is still the 2014 _ 16 models on the road keep it open till it runs its course. Most cases the module takes care of the issue. In mine it did not . The bulletin says don't replace the ignition switch just the antenna if the module didn't take care of it. So that's what I did. I preferred to keep the security feature at this time.

I'll keep this thread open.

:agree: And appreciate the "Bump". I have the 2014 RTS. Bought it just recently, so don't know if DESS was ever an issue. Hopefully not jinxing myself, but appreciate the heads up just the same. As they say, Knowledge is power.....well, maybe I should have just kept quiet! :roflblack: Anyways, thanks for the Bump.

Actually DESS wasn't an issue until some engineer decided to fix some thing that wasn't broken :gaah: ..... and They managed to screw it up .... Mine failed in 2015 and was re-placed under warranty .... After I got back home ( from SpyderFest ) I moved the new DESS module ( which costs about $135.00 ) to a position under the right front headlight .... after clipping the wire ties the OEM cables would reach that far ... I was able to have the DESS dis-abled so now it isn't ever going to be an issue ... If you can take off the FRUNK, I recommend moving the module. After it's moved you now have very easy access if it ever fails ( 10 minutes in the dark without a flashlite in a rainstorm :roflblack: ) ..... Mike

I recently watched a Youtube video from "It's Yours. OWN It" showing how he purchased BUDS with Megatech program to disable his DESS Module. He stated he had the dreaded DESS pop up twice. Pretty interesting, although he didn't show the actual Module itself where it was located.

So, I had commented to him with "Great video, but a little worrisome not knowing "when" you will encounter the DESS dilemma. I have the 2014 RTS as well. Is there a way of knowing if this module has already been updated? My curiosity is in full mode now.

His reply was ....."the location of the Module was behind the frunk, and also listed the "Updated part #710004916" and the "Original part #710004190". Also stated there is no programming that needs done, it is plug and play". So, someday I just may take the frunk off to cure my curiosity to see if indeed it had been replaced at some point.

Mike, I like your idea of relocating the Module to an easier access location. Great recommendation! Thanks

Go to my Bio page and then to my Albums ... I have pics of the DESS module where it was and where I moved it to...... From what I've learnt from others and myself, the module rarely fails completely on the first incident..... it seems to be a progressive thing ... but once it happens you need to take action ASAP. The most difficult thing about removing the Frunk ( lots of video's on it ) .... is re-connecting the rubber Elbow for the air intake ( go to cheapcycleparts.com & look at the Fiche'.... it will show you all the parts and how they line up ) ..... None of the bolts you remove are actually "weight bearing" - what carries the weight are the metal hangers attached to the front upper frame ... the frunk has reliefs that go on those two hangers .... the upper two middle 10mm bolts don't have to be replaced ( mine aren't 40,000 mi. ) ... what the 10mm bolts do is to prevent any frunk movement that will allow it to come off the hangers so they arn't really stressed at all .... I agree if you have time move the DESS module like I did ... Now - because if it craps out it will only take you 10 min to fix if you have another module. ..... PS I wouldn't bother getting upset if you can't re-attach that Elbow ... it doesn't have to be AIR TIGHT and it's not likely to get any water into it if it isn't ... I removed the entire plastic Air intake and have a 3in. pipe into my airbox ( as seen in another album )..... good luck ... Mike  PPS the mega-tech BUDS license is not cheap...

Pretty much first thing I did to ours when I got BUDS. Offered to do it for others and they said no. Bet they will be impatient for me to disable it if DESS acts up, or worse leaves them stranded.

I have to agree there with the problems it incurs. Disable it and be done with it, from what I have been reading.
Talk about having a bad day :yikes:...this would be at the top of the list. They say, "walkin' ain't crowded", but.... ugh!

:agree: ... DESS fix is about $135.00 DIY , if a stealer does it add about $ 250 to 300 in labor ..... Mike

Biorick, You are Welcome, for the Bump on the thread.

Is there anyone around/or near you to disable the D.E.S.S in case you need to?

Deanna

Mike, can you explain DIY $135? Don't you have to have BUDS for that?

The $135.00 is for the DESS module .... the DIY is if you can take the frunk off .... the rest is a piece of cake ........ Mike

There is a motorsports dealer about 30 miles from me that are selling, and I'm assuming servicing, Spyders. Have to watch that "assuming" though. Just not sure what all their "Can Am" capabilities are at the moment. I need to call and ask, just in case.

I have NEVER heard of any dealer that would / could dis-able the DESS. .... BRP would yank dealership association with BRP products. Even if someone has a BUDS license it may not be able to dis-connect the DESS with the normal version of the license ..... Mike

I'm not sure, I'm just assuming Deanna was talking about anyone in general, that's why I responded in the manner I did. This Spyder world is so new to me right now that I'm not sure what's legal and what's not. Thank goodness for this forum and it's guidance .
Still so much to learn about these dealers, their "cans and can'ts", and their "do's and don'ts". Its like Spyder Course 101 at it's finest! Still so much to learn. But having fun as I go! :2thumbs:
