Not to be a pessimist but I think BRP is grasping at straws here. They don't know what to do so they replace everything. In my mind, the ignition switch just holds the key. The communication is between the key and the DESS module. The switch has nothing to do with it. I sincerely hope there is more to it that I don't understand. Wouldn't be the first time. :roflblack:
Is your unit consistently showing the error? According to the shop manual, there is no way to actually test the DESS module. The manual says to replace the module and if the problem goes away, then it was the module. If it does not go away, then it wasn't the module. But if your problem is intermittent, you won't know for sure if it's fixed or not. That would be the case here even if you replace both components. If your error always occurs, then the good news is you will know if it's fixed or not.
I appreciate your updates on this problem. I know you'll keep us posted on the results after the work is done Friday. Thanks.
Thanks for posting on this thread. Good Luck. Post on this thread your results. I would like to keep this thread going, for new/and current spyder owners. DeannaIs the ignition switch hard wired to the DESS or, as is my understanding, the system is wireless and the key code is transmitted to the DESS? If it is wireless, then as has been previously mentioned, there is an antenna on the ignition switch for transmission of the key code information to the DESS module. So replacing the switch would seem a logical step. Yes, the ignition holds the key but if the antenna is not transmitting, the assembly needs replacing.
Did you have your switch replaced also?I had my DESS module replaced in order to fix a static noise in the wireless dongle.
It went away for a while, but I'm sad to report it's back.
I've told my dealer and BRP will address it again when it's warm enough for me to drop the Spyder off.
The DESS MODULE and the SWITCH under WARRENTY. Be sure your dealership has the parts, before you have the work down. Keep us posted, and please post on this thread any updates that you have.Just had the DESS show up again:banghead: after having the module changed last spring. Such a nice day had to go for ride and got home did some chores when to park it and TADA. I will be visiting with the dealer tomorrow and showing the pic of the error and making them open a case for a new one again.:banghead:
Take pictures and show them to your can-am dealership. Do you have warranty on your 2014 RS?I have a 2014 RS and have gotten the DESS code. Bike goes into the shop next week-end for a few things and I have alerted them to the code error. Hoping all will be fixed easily.
AJ, Next time you get the DESS ERROR take a picture, show to it to your dealer, if you have any warranty left on your :spyder2: the DESS MODUULE and the switch is UNDER WARRANTY.OK here goes.
Disclaimer this may not work for all people, but nothing to lose.
Today, when I pulled in at home, I did not ark in my "usual" location.
I got off bike, went into the trunk, made a connection for my iPod and then restarted the Spyder. In all about 2 mins.
Bang DESS error. Walked away came back in about 5 mins - DESS error.
I tried repeatedly was about to call for a tow to the dealership, then I remembered a statement made some time ago about Wireless Interference and Saturation.
I turned the key released the brake and rolled it forward about 10 feet.
Turned it on, hit the Eco button and the DESS error was gone.
Being a "glutton" for punishment, I put the Spyder in reverse and moved it back to where it was.
Shut it down and then restarted - NOT - DESS error!
Rolled it forward again, startup fine NO DESS error.
What was different in those 10 feet - my wireless router and my Direct TV wireless boxes. Bot frequencies are used 2.5 & 5GHz. But remember this is nit INTERFERENCE but SATURATION.
Not be be deterred, I tried ONE MORE time. This time wrapping the key in several layers of "tin" foil at the original location. Shazam! It started up.
So two things which may work for SOME people in a pinch. Carry some tin foil and try shutting off your wireless (temporarily) on your cell phone.
WHY, BRP would use 2.5 or even 5 GHz as the frequency given all the wireless out there is beyond me.
No one knows exactly WHAT BRP did to FIX the problem (if indeed it is fixed) but I sure would like to know if it relates to frequency
Bet the "Police" models don't have this problem
AJ
Is this the first time that you got the D.E.S.S ERROR on your 2015 RT SM6?Started getting this on mine as well. 2015 RT Base SM6. The cell phone theory is interesting but i always have my phone in the same place so not sure why it would do it sometimes and sometimes not. I will take a picture and send to my dealer see what they say. Even though i dont trust them.
The D.E.S.S. module is under warranty, have your dealership OPEN UP A CASE WITH BRP, and be sure your dealership logs the info. and get a copy of the repair order. So if it happens again ( I hope it does not) you will have a record of it. Also, if it happens again TAKE A PICTURE and show it to your dealership. Then they( dealership ) can say it did not happen.Did the turn on and off 5 times without rebooting trick and the spyder started. Drove it to the dealers and it is in the shop as we speak. 2015 rts se6 with 4100 miles.
Also my dealership reprogram both keys ( that I have) and they replaced the switch( part # 710004413) on my 2014RTS-SE6. Keep us posted on this, good luck! DeannaJust called the dealer and he said they reprogrammed the keys and everything looks good. They want to keep it for a few days to see if it does it again.
Thanks for posting. I hope BRP tells your dealership to replace the module. If they do would you post the part # for the module.Just talked to the service department and since they reprogrammed the keys it has not failed again. They have opened a case with BRP and are awaiting further instructions from BRP. They will replace the module if Brp instructs them too.
