Deer-pedo Effect on LH RT Mirror

SilverSurfer

RT-S PE#0391
I'm going to describe what happened to me last evening on the way home as a "deer-pedo," as contrasted with a "torpedo." So I'm cruisin down my favorite back road on my RT ... speed about 40, tunes carrying me along ... head -up ... eyes forward, scanning ... and then.

BAM! :yikes: Impacting then glancing off the the left side of my Spyder at just under a 90 degree angle is a tawny little doe. I mean ... she hit me broadside! Then she glances off my left thigh; knocks off my left hand mirror assembly and disappears. I'm swerving to get the bike under control and stopped ... The Spyder's VSC kicks in to keep my track straight. I even heard it retard a cylinder. The mirror goes clunkety off the bike and down onto the pavement and I hear bouncing plastic behind me down the road.

A friendly couple in a pick-up saw the whole thing and turned around to come check on me, while stopping to police up my mirror assembly. I told them, other than frayed nerves I was okay. They handed me my mirror assembly. The top and bottom cowls had come apart. I tried for a minute to put it back together at roadside, but it was turning dusk, so I just threw it in the front trunk and drove the Spyder the remaining mile or so home. No other damage. The deer's fur coated the rubber LH passenger grip, and some got stuck in the speaker grill, which I'm leaving there as a souvenir.

After I got home, I started working on the mirror assembly. I got the top of the cowl to snap together; but the bottom I'm having problems with. It looks like it wants to seat, but just keeps coming loose. At this point, the top holds the whole thing pretty well together; I secured the bottom with a half-width strand of duck tape (which one can't see). I plugged the cable back together, checked my signals and flashers and the light still works fine. There was some minor scuffing along the outer top edges of the assembly where it fell on the asphalt. Also, I think the impact might have stretched the mounting clips a little. It re-installed fine, but has a tiny bit more flop than the right side mirror.

Anyway, it's back together and will hold long enough while I order a replacement assembly ($159.95 from garganos.com).:gaah: Sure would like to know the secret of getting the housing/cowls to seat together firmly. The silver lining is that I'm now an expert on pulling off and re-installing the mirror assembly.

Anyone with a similar experience?

The other note I wished to make is how glad I was that I was on the Spyder and not two wheels. Had I been on my other bike, I would have been off the road, into a ditch and probably a tree. The Spyder's control systems kicked right in and kept me on the road, tracked me straight while I was disoriented from the impact and brought me to a stop. I'm also glad it was a doe and not a buck for obvious reasons.

Glad to hear you're ok. I was just talking with SpyderWolf this morning about deer strikes. You're #3 as far as I know. All walked away.

BTW, did you go back for the deer? They die of shock fairly easy, so it's doubtful it survived.

Re: Go Back for the Deer?

Umm--yeahh..mriiighht. Well, I was having imaginings of throwing the deer across the back seat and hard cases; but ... umm ... I didn't have a game tarp. :D ... and I didn't have my leatherman with me to dress 'er out!

As to the deer dying of shock; well ... what'm I? Chopped livuh? Seriously, the folks that I described who saw the whole thing said the doe just hopped off into the woods. It wasn't that hard of an impact. Her greatest body contact, after her chin or something popped off my mirror (they are hardly rigid anyway) was actually against my thigh, and then she just slipped off my left passenger grip and hard case. Wild animals shed like crazy ... especially in our 90+ degree heat these days. Most of the fur I picked up was was probably just molt.

Thanks indeed for checkin' in. So I'm the third deer strike you've read about on here? I put my hand on the Spyder this morning and thought, "thank you baby." Three wheels, 929 pounds and that stability control. I can't imagine how I would've ended up if I were on two wheels.

I am also glad to hear you came out okay, and only need a new mirror for your Spyder. Hopefully your thigh will not start hurting really bad later on. I live out in the middle of the woods, and see deer all the time while I am ryding. I have hit one with a truck before, and while I hope it never happens on the Spyder I have a feeling it may just be a matter of time.

I am very glad to hear that the Spyder holds up well under these impacts as well.

WOW....:yikes: Glad to hear that you are ok. Frayed nerves and a sore leg are a lot better than broken bones. I'm glad you were able to keep the Spyder under control and the VSS worked in your favor. The minor damage you have can be fixed fairly easy, but you were very lucky that you weren't severely injured.
Again, the three wheeled Spyder saves another ryder :2thumbs:
Maybe we could have Mark at CAT make a deer hit patch.....:roflblack:

Glad to hear you are ok. I have had a few close calls but so far no hits... Ima keepin my fingers crossed

Glad ur OK and so is the Spyder! The girlfriend came real close to a baby dear one day when we were riding but was able to brake hard to avoid it.
I do agree with you when you say you would have been worse off on two wheels with the same strike.

Glad to hear you are okay. I have not a deer (yet) unless you count beeing a teen age driving instructer and the teenager driving hits one. He did do the right thing and no humans were hurt. Deer, not so good.

Good to hear you are OK, and also glad it was a small deer and not a full size buck. Fortunate her first contact was the mirror and not your leg or arm.:gaah:
We had about a 20 foot encounter with a black bear here in the Ocala Natl forest who kind of gave us a little distance when he heard the noise from the Spyder; glad he didnt like noise cause he was bigger than i am. Our deer here in Fla are size of big dogs but still a hazard.
