Has anyone experienced the Spyder tankslap. It happened once on Tuesday and twice today while we were on away vacation. The Spyder is actually turning left and right viloiently by itself (while going straight) but, it's only happening intermittingly. The only way it stops wobbling is, you actually have to hit the breaks and come to a complete stop. Thank God that all three times it this has happened, it was below 40 mph and never through a code. I have tried replicating it myself, but when it's not doing it, it seems fine........

It was so bad (scary) that Holly got really upset and demanded to get off the Spyder and wanted another ride home. I rode the Spyder to my dealer this afternoon and they are thinking the DPS is bad because they said something doesn't feel right up front while turning the handlebar back and forth while the Spyder is off. I had the recall/replacement of the DPS about a year and a half ago.

They are contacting BRP tomorrow to see how to proceed. Anybody experience a similar senerio with a bad DPS ?????

Holy...tank slap?!! :yikes: Didn't think we could get them on the Spyder being two wheels up front. Glad you managed to get it back and looked at. I guess you owe one to Holly now after scaring the crap out of her.:p

Glad you survived! Besides the DPS, make sure the front shock and suspension bushings are inspected for wear or play, the tie-rod ends and ball joints are checked, and the steering sensors are tested and recalibrated. The connector to the DPS should be checked for moisure or corrosion, and the front frame ground should be checked for tightness. Your problem could have a combination of causes. The worst problems usually are the result of more than one factor.

Yep, a few times on my 09 Phantom. One was on video from my Contour camera and that was the last time I rode her. None on the RT though.
Mine was caused by a bad DPS unit and me fighting it to maintain a straight line, at 60-70 mph

Glad you are both ok

We've never experienced anything like what you described, & I'll be honest, I hope we never do!

Teddy & I are both glad that both you & Holly survived, as I'd hate to imagine if this happened at highway speeds. Please keep us updated with what the dealer has to say as to the cause.

We're both sending you positive energy for a good outcome & that Holly will not loose faith & still continues to ryde with you.

Sounds like a scary ride, glad you're both ok, I wouldn't ride it until its fixed.

please keep us upto date with what they find

Thinking outside the box, My concern is the lack of lugnuts. I know some of us a really agressive in the turns. Hope your problem is resolved before something serious arrises

Wow!!

The three of you are very fortunate. Of the three, it's not hard to understand how scary it must have been for Holly. It's one thing to experience a problem like this as an operator, but to be a passenger when something like this happens wouldn't set well with me either.

Whatever the cause of this is.....it, to me, is far more alarming than the thought of going into limp mode in front of a Simi ever was. Speaking for myself....this is a BIG deal and very unsettling. Especially if its cause was solely a malfunctioning DPS.

Please keep us posted.

Grabbed your front fender struts and see if it moves back and forth and if so it's a good chance it's your a arm bushings.

Randy, that has happened to me and it was a loose tie rod end that did not get tighten enough after the DPS recall. Steel locking nut and should never loosen so I suppect something worn.

:yikes: These guys have laready hit the points of concern; so I'm just glad that you both made it home okay...
Please let us know what they find!

With 3 DPS's replaced I can tell you that there was no wobbling involved, just sudden turns to the left and "fight" when correction turns to the right applied. :doorag:

When mine got put back together with one bushing missing; it was "twitchy", but manageable. This sounds like a lot more is going on.

I have had a similar problem of the front wheels shifting left and right very fast also (like a tank slapper). On mine it happens around 45mph and it is more pronounced on a concrete road. Speed up or slow down and it goes away. I had a shop look at it and had them swap the front tires and rims from another bike and the problem was gone. My tires look fine, no odd wear with 9k miles, actually not much wear at all, back is a different story, center gone. I have elected to just not drive at 45 for very long until these wear out. The shaking does get your attention. :yikes:

Thanks Scotty. To be quite honest I was running out of time to get her to the dealer to check some of these things out myself. Holly demanded me to take it to the dealer anyway for her own peace of mind. There is definitely something wrong but, not being able to replicate it by shaking the handlebars back and forth while moving (I have tried it at various speeds) has me scratching my head. The whole trip from my house to the dealer (aprox 30 miles of country roads) it never did it. :dontknow:

I'm glad to see this post Dave. It makes me feel like we are heading in the right direction with resolving this issue.

Grabbed your front fender struts and see if it moves back and forth and if so it's a good chance it's your a arm bushings.

I just hit 20k miles earlier in the week and to be honest I have never changed those out before on any car so that might be out of my comfort zone anyway to tackle that without first seeing one being done. I jinxed myself because I was just telling Holly a few weeks ago that the Spyder has performed flawlessly all summer long.

I'm going to call my dealer and let them know about this and Lamonts and Scotty's suggestions.

Thanks guys for all the great feedback on this so far, I'm confident that the problem will be diagnosed and I'll be back on the road in a week or so.
