Dave & Teds Most Excellent Adventures 2013

In preperation for Teddy's Maggie Valley & Lamonster Bar-B-Q trip

Trying to learn from past experiences and to not repeat the bad ones, so we hooked up our Moto-Mate Camper to Teds Red Sled, and litterally took it for a shake down cruise to see just how much shaking was gonna be going on this time & we learned a thing or two

Having the camper in tow, every bump is exagerated, but no where near how it was with our SpyderFest trip. Changing the PSI in the tires, along with adjusting the preload on the Elkas has made a marked improvement. But I'm thinking, or I should say I'm feeling, something still isn't right with the rear of Teds Sled. Its still a pretty stiff ryde compared to before we switched to the car tires, and that may just be the nature of the beast with having stiffer sidewalls than that of the OEM tires that we replaced. Its not unbearable, just not nearly as smooth as it was before the switch.

The fronts, now with the adjustments done, I don't really notice much difference, but that rear tire, I do. I mean, if we run over a man-hole cover dead center with the rear tire, doing only 25-35 mph, there's such an impact and jarring that it feels almost as if the rim of the wheel is taking the hit, and therefor, transferring that motion throughout the frame of the Spyder :yikes: and to us

I've actually pulled over twice that this has happened, to make sure the rim was ok and didn't get cracked, and never noticed anything out of the ordinary looking, so we've gone on. And both those times, it was without the camper in tow, and the rear air-suspension set at its stiffest setting. I've tried adjusting the air-ryde to see if that would change anything with this situation, but it really only raises and lowers your seating position, and doesn't really effect the comfort of the ryde, at least as far as I have been able to notice.

Not sure if maybe I should try a different PSI in the rear tire and see if that helps, but I've tried a few different scenarios, and we're sitting at 26 PSI in the rear now, and I'm not sure if I should try more or less. We were at 34, then 32, then 28 & now at 26 and that has gotten the ryde as stated, much better than before, but still jarring if the rear tire hits a pot-hole or man-hole cover dead center. Being a car tire, I'm afraid to go to low, but I don't know what that limit really is being on a Spyder RT-S, do you?

Also noticed that the new sun-canopy, while far from ideal, but due to being out of time, will have to suffice for this trip, tho mounting strategies have to be changed. Using the suction cup mounts worked, and it stayed on, but in cross winds, that thing would bobble from side to side, that I'd almost get motion sickness watching the effect in the Teddy-Cam display, as we have the camera mounted to the inside front of the Sun-Canopy, so any wobble is visible in the display. So I figure today, after work and hopefully the shop has the new Wind-Shield support and motor in and can get it installed before our trip  that I'll try remounting Teddy's new Sun-Canopy. I'm thinking that using the standard ram-mounts on both the sides will give it more lateral support that its desperately needing now, and then using the one suction cup mount for the single front middle support, that way I don't have to drill a hole and weaken the entire structure. Not sure how it will pan out, will have to do it and see, but am thinking it should do well enough for this trip.

On the way home from the auto-wash, we got caught in a bit of rain about 5 minutes from the condo. We were up on the I75 bridge going over the Ohio River that's right in front of where we live, and all kinds of ppl were straining like crazy at seeing Teddy standing up in his carrier, as if he was pose'n for pics in the rain :doorag: Every persons face I looked at had a Huge Grin from :2thumbs: ear to ear :2thumbs: and it put a smile on my mug as well. But then, we encountered something we hadn't encountered, as of yet. We took our exit off the bridge and made our way thru the side streets for about 2 minutes til we got to our condo. Pulled up to the garage, and pulled Teds Sled in front ways, with the camper hanging out about a foot, and then I proceeded to get out the leaf blower and give Teds Sled a nice blow dry since it was just cleaned and waxed. Next thing I know, a car pulls up and parks in my neighbors parking spot in the lot, and I didn't think anything of it, just that my neighbor had company. Well let me tell you, she wasn't there for my neighbor at all  she was there for TEDDY :yikes: She got out of her car and walked up to our garage, and with me blow-drying the Sled, she motions for me to talk to her, so I shut the blower off so I could hear her, with a confused look upon my face, I ask if I could help her.

"Oh My God!!! I've never done anything like this, please understand, I swear I'm NOT A STALKER!!!"
Well, that sent red flags up for me right away, cause I've had issues (real ones) with Stalkers in the past, and that's one reason I'm NOT on FaceBook. But usually when someone you don't know makes a statement like that, its usually cause they are but don't want you to think they are:lecturef_smilie: So I was pensive to say the least, but also know the effect Teddy has on people, so I tried keeping an open mind with the young lady :dontknow: and sure enough, it was innocent  I asked what was up and she proceeded to tell me how she has an 8yr old little boy at home, who loves Spyder MotorCycles and when she saw us on the bridge, and with Teddy ryding and standing and posing with his Doggles on she said she couldn't help herself, and that she just had to get a picture of Teddy on the Spyder for her little boy  "Please Please Please, I'm so sorry for following you and I know this isn't right, but it would just make his day:bowdown:" I just smiled and laughed and nodded sure ;) I grabbed a Teddy-Treat and put his Doggles back on him and asked him to stand up in his carrier and pose, and as long as he knows I have a Teddy-Treat for him, he's all for it  So we even did a few Hi5's for her to catch on film for her kid, and I swear, she was so thrilled, & I even had Teddy give her a Hi5 or two and I thought she was gonna cry for a minute:rolleyes: She repeatedly apologized for bothering and stalking us, and kept thanking us over and over as she looked at the pics she had just taken :p

Was actually pretty cool, tho to be honest, we're used to all that fuss out in public, but not at home, so at first, I was a bit worried, but should have known better:ohyea: I just wish I could've seen her kids expression as she showed him those pics and told him about meeting Teddy :ohyea: The pup does it again :doorag:

That bumping feeling with a trailer is often caused by inadequate tongue weight. The tongue weight should be 10% or more of the loaded trailer weight, although the Spyder is limited to 40 pounds. If you have stuff loaded at the back of your trailer, move it forward and see if the ride improves. It usually improves the handling, too. A trailer that is light in the front tends to wander.

The jarring sounds more like a rear suspension problem on the Spyder. Check that your ACS is working, Lower the ACS setting if it is set real high. Be sure it lowers, if the ACS link has come loose it will pump up to max and stay ther, making for a very rigid ride. The ACS link is attached toward the mid-front of the left side of the swingarm. Take a look that both ends are attached. Also push down hard on the back of the Spyder and look for a deflection of the suspension, and a controlled rebound with no repeated bounce.

Thanks Scotty for the input but the main concern is the harshness even w/o the camper

I'm proud of myself for this one. I actually remember you telling me this a year or so ago about the proper load weight distribution when it comes to a trailer or camper ;) and I'll admit I've never actually weighed it to verify, but like you mentioned, you can easily tell in the ryde if you've got it right or not. Thru trial and error, if we have too much weight toward the back of the camper, the Sled will fish-tale in the rear end, and if we have too much weight toward the tongue, then we get a Bobble-Head effect on the rear end of the sled. Seemingly for our set-up, we get the smoothest ryde with no Fish'n or Bobble'n with a 50/50 down the center load distribution ;) I realize its contrary to logic, but it works best for us:rolleyes: with our set-up.

But most of what I was discussing above, is even without the camper, we have the harshness being felt in the rear tire/wheel/rim when hitting something like a man-hole cover or pot-hole dead center with the rear tire  I know the easy answer is to avoid doing that, but we all know that's not always possible. I'm just trying to figure out, if the tire had enough or even too much pressure, then it shouldn't feel like the rim would be hitting, so maybe I don't have enough pressure, and when we have the direct impact on the rear tire, then the tires sidewalls give too much, allowing for the impact to actually be felt on the rim of the wheel itself :dontknow: I'm just not sure :helpsmilie:

Still sounds like a rear suspension issue. Check that the ACS link is attached, check that the ACS actually raises and lowers the rear when you change the setting (engine running and in gear), check that the rear end moves and rebounds when pushed down...but doesn't keep bouncing.

Gone over all of the above multiple times and they all check out ok. The only oddity of note, is that I constantly here the ACS kicking in, at about 15 second intervals ..... constantly ..... even when no adjustment is called for or being made, I can still here the pulse as if it were. When the button for change is pushed, and in gear, all works as its designed to, and once the changes are made, back to hearing the constant pulse. I never recalled hearing the constant pulse before, and last time I had it at our local shop, I mentioned it to the Service Manager when I dropped it off & had them do a full service. But when I asked about it upon picking the byke up, the Service Manager told me it was 'Normal' which I knew better :lecturef_smilie: but there's a time and a place for every battle, and I didn't want to have to leave the sled there for who knows how long for them to figure it out, and chose to let it go, cause as I said, it all seems to be working as designed, except hearing that constant pulse  and the harshness of the rear tire seemingly hitting the rim at hard impacts :sour: not sure if its related or not :dontknow:

But it seems my stars aren't in alignment anyways, as its almost noon now, and they still haven't called to let me know if the replacement Windshield support/motor had come in or not, so it looks like I now have to decide to delay leaving for the trip for who knows how long for it to come in and they work us in to replace the unit, or we chance it with it rigged with a hose clamp & duct tape  decisions decisions

Do you hear the compressor running constantly, or the solenoid releasing air (hissing). Neither is normal for an extended period of time. The Spyder should find its set level and stay there. If there is a leak in the system, the compressor will cycle frequently, and the leak should be found and fixed. If the ACS sensor is disconnected or fails, the solenoid will repeatedly release air (and the compressor may run, too). Bottom line is, with the Spyder running and in gear, lowering the setting should lower the Spyder. The solenoid will release air until it finds the level, then stop. Raising teh setting should cause the compressor to run and the Spyder should rise to the level and then then stay there. The compressor should then stop running. If anything else is happening, something is wrong...no matter what the tech said. Lazy techs give me a rash!

The stars are aligning

We're at the shop now getting the new windshield mount & motor put on now. Looks like its going to be a long night getting everything else done for the trip in the morning, but at least its getting done

About to head out

Finishing getting everything loaded and turned off here & will be on the road soon to meet other locals for the trip down to Lexington, then meeting up with that group & will be traveling the rest of the way to Maggie Valley with about 16 other Spyders:clap::yes::yes::clap: Safe journey to all those that are about or already on the road, may we all make it safely there:pray: Enjoy the trip and each others company ;)

We made it

And I forgot Teddy's allergy medicine in the fridge at home & now he's sleeping next to me snoring like a little freight train  I deserve it tho :lecturef_smilie::opps:

like any good story you know there's always drama to be had

we originally planned to share campsite with Mike & Dee from New York, but they had to cancel last minute. Anyone have a site their willing to share or an extra bed at a hotel room? We'd really appreciate it, as the extra expense isn't in the already non-existent budget. If we can't find a place we'll have to cancel the trip & head back home:yikes: If anyone does have space or an extra bed in a hotel room that they don't mind sharing, please text me at 859-609-3464. We're packing up our camper now & heading to the fairgrounds to see about registration for the event:helpsmilie:

good news

Ran into a couple on their Spyder right before the storm hit & they invited us to share their 2 bedroom cabin , so thankfully we have a place to stay out of the weather:clap:

Dave, saw you pull into the event grounds yesterday and immediately get swamped by people... You were at your bike for 30-40 minutes so i ate lunch and then went to look for you but you were gone... The Sled was there but i couldnt fond you and Teddy..

maybe tomorrow at Lamonts....

Dave,

Me and the family are planning on stopping by Lamont's tomorrow on the way back from Myrtle Beach, SC. Hopefully we're allowed on without a Spyder!

we just made it back to Cincy

Thank God, Teddys personal vet is here today & he's back with her now & is stable. I can't say the sam

What Happened?

Dave ... what happened? Are you and Teddy sick? Did you, or he, have a medical crisis while away from home? Did you get into an accident? Did Teddy get hurt somehow?

Sorry to press with so many questions ... but your tone is certainly ominous!:pray: that all is okay ..... Ann
