Custom Intake??

A few weeks ago someone posted pics of a custom intake they made-- using PVC piping that they painted black.....

I can't find that thread for the life of me... anyone know where it is or who that was who did it? I believe it was on an RT.....

Thanks!

I thought it was Farmboy, but I couldn't find the thread. :dontknow: Sorry! :doorag:

In this thread: http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?35408-AIR-BOX-FOR-RT&highlight=faint

There is a reference to the thread you are talking about, there is also a link which leads to a dead end, which tells me that it has been deleted, either by the author or an administrator.

I cannot say for sure which, however, I would send you to Farmboy directly for more information.

Because as far as I know, the air intake is where I blow hot air out of my helmet.

Okay, so it was farmboy that did that mod........ But why has it all been deleted???

Here are the pic, but DO NOT TRY IT!! It did not work out. on paper it looked good but at 7500 rpm she did not like it, something about air turbulence. she would stumble and would not run at high speed and high rpm. I deleted the thread because I did not want some one cutting there stock box and it not work out and have to spend 120.00 for a new box like I did. Jerry

Thanks for the info. Wasn't looking to do it exactly like yours----but gives me some ideas. Not using my airbox anyway.

We learn the most from our mistakes......

To bad . Looks like an awesome set-up.

I think some of the problems could have come from going 2 into 1 instead of just using two filters -- one for each cylinder...... and that you cut off the velocity stacks so they no longer had the tapered ends. There's another thread out here discussing this....

I'm thinking more of a box that contains the stock velocity stacks and then have the pvc pipes attach to the box and then to twin filters.... just in the thought process at this time.....

Why couln't you play with your power commander to stop it from stumbling ??? :dontknow:

AIR TURBULANCE

I honestly don't see how the set-up you built could cause air turbulance....air restriction maybe ..but not turbulance.....after I did my cold air intake I had the spyder up to 115 mph and it ran fine....I didn't check my RPM's but they must have been 9000 + - ....I was using stock air box and filter at the time ...now i have the Green filter in the stock air box......not many miles on this set-up yet....Mike......

I was about to mentiong dont the Cuba MO people have a ram air set up as part of their stage one pkg ? ram air, filter and plugs/wires and exhaust ?

I was thinking about dual filter with silicone 90* reducer, upside down so opening for filter will be largest possible but that would just as loud as evoluzione set up. Now that set up worked, hot air or not inside engine compartment but is was too loud.

A small air box/stock stack or similar with 3-4" hose drawing air from outside is what I want.
I thought about using k&n apollo intake with filter-side upfront or out like typical car application but can spyder produce that much vacuum like cars to suck air in that well from that far away???
I was thinking filter should be inside the air box and get as much air as possible in the box and let engine suck it thru filter. Widest diameter hose possible with air scoop, positioned outside plastic.

Of course, this will be a "try and let's see what happens" deal. :)
I will check out summit racing retail store and home depot for suitable plastic air box or plenum/air cleaner housing this weekend.

I messed with the airbox a little, a few different type mods. One was an evo filter and cold air flex hose and flange using the right frunk scoop for ram. Mels Monster Garage made a ram tube for a while, a little quciker and cleaner if you can find one. Now I have a flange on the box with a Spectre cone filter up front, no internal filter. I used styrene from the hobby shop for a cover plate since the flange and airbox aren't the same dimensions and matched them up. So many ways to do this, it's fun to see the diversity of home mods.
Too bad the PVC intake wasn't a success, that looked pretty good. I guess they didn't/don't have the black PVC in that size? Is it possible to rework the velocity plate or is it permanently pvc glued?

I did try to play with the pcv but just was to restrictive on air in the upper rpm range. I cut mu box up so I would have a mounting plate. put the 1 1/2 pvc elb. inside, "would not go on out side for the way the plate was shaped". For experiment after I saw it would not work, I cut it all off but the 2 elb. and tried a run with open throttle body's and the same happens. took it all off! and ran with out anything at all, it did not want to go over 5000 rpms going threw the gears. Ordered a new air box and put a k-n filter in and she ran great! Guess this old red-neck not going to out smart the engineer that developed this big air box. I guess this is like a atv or a dirt bike, you pull filter off and they will not run right....:banghead:

So you're saying it had problems even running wide-open without any filter on? You would need to adjust your Juice Box or Power Commander to add a bunch more fuel.... and maybe they can't add enough... where you would probably have to modify the fuel pressure to get that much gas flowing...:dontknow:

Why Are We Messing With The Stock Air Box Anyways???

Hi Guy's,

It's been a few months ago already since I installed the Kewl Metal Air Cleaner, HMF Exhaust and an HMF EFI Controller.

It took quite a few trial and error adjustments to the EFI Controller before I got it dialed in. However one day I found the magic settings and my Spyder is running like a raped Ape.

Performance gains through the RPM Range have been pretty substantial. She pulls really strong! The cough's and sputters are gone except a couple when the engine is cold and first starting out. I still have a little backfiring through the exhaust on high speed off throttle, so she may be still running a little lean. However without doing a re-map I've achieved some pretty nice results.

I'm very happy with the outcome! The air intake is a noisy little rascal, but I've actually come to really like it.

Remember when we were kid's and we used to flip the air cleaner lid on our cars. The sound brings back nice memories. :ohyea:

It's nice to take the panels off and actually see that there is a pretty nice looking V Twin in there.

Rather than trying to cut and saw, chop up and modify the stock box, I would strongly recommend spending the bucks and try my choices of Mod's or something similar.

The HMF Exhaust has a Sweet Growl....almost sounds like a Harley.

I've seen a large increase of Spyder's on the road here in SW Florida!

Others are discovering just how much fun this Machine is to ride! I know I sure enjoy mine!

I think most of us that are trying, if not all already have been there and done that and just looking for that "something" and enjoying the process. :)
Glad you found yours, for now. ^^
