• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Curse you DESS

:agree: And somewhere in the many prior posts someone referred to it as an "ignition module". That would just lead to further arguments with the dealer. It is not an ignition module; it is a security-system DESS module.

:agree:

Great undertaking. That is what is needed. The parts info that I posted in Deanna's thread states that yes, 710004190 is the new part number for 2014's. The earlier part number for 2014's was 710003595 but it has been supseded by the 4190 number. Also note that these are not the same as the DESS module for the 2015's. That is a different number.

My 2014 is an April build. It was built after the early oil leak was remedied in production and it does not have a key number on the faulty list. But which DESS module?? Who Knows?? When did BRP update the module and part number?? Who Knows?? I hope you get some responses to your request.
The people that have 2015 spyders the new part # is 710004241,, Models : RS, ST, RT...............for the DESS MODULE.... Also, It is covered under WARRANTY.

Problem: ( this is on the repair order ) Intermittently, the ignition key may not be recognized causing the unit not to start. The D.E.S.S ERROR message well be displayed in the cluster. Solution: Replace the D.E.S.S module. Program the keys using B.U.D.S referring to the RT shop manual section Digitally Encoded Security System (D.E.S.S)

Warranty: Claim under regular Warranty.

but it will happen if things don't change.

So far
- "Heh Heh - it started just fine when we took it off the tow truck."
- "Heh Heh - don't know what to do if it doesn't happen for us!"
- "Well, heh heh, we plan on getting to it later today or maybe tomorrow."
- "Heh Heh, we've never heard of this problem."

I explained the number of posts about the DESS module, given them Deanna's part number (Thanks Deanna!), and told them I didn't want the bike back as-is because I wasn't going to get stranded again with this error. They tried to blame the IPS gadget from LaMonster, but I told them I'd been using it for months, AND my spare key which doesn't have IPS didn't work either.

I'm going to try to contact BRP today and pressing them to get results out of this dealer.:mad::mad::mad:
Print my " D.E.S.S. KEY CODE PICTURES ON A 2014RTS-SE6" take to your dealership, show them. You are Welcome! Deanna

I got my 2014 fixed yesterday at ProCaliber. It seems to be specific to the 2014 and is caused by some sort of electromagnetic issue. Shawn but a filter n the ignition (about 1 hr. job) and BRP paid for it. They are very aware of the problem but it does't affect all 2014's. Shawn put in an RO (Repair Order) and BRP sent the part. THEY CAN, AND WILL FIX IT FOR FREE! Yu could call Shawn at ProCalaber and get more specifics. Hope this helps to.....

Ride in comfort,

John, The D.E.S.S MODULE is under WARRANTY. I had the D.E.S.S. Module replaced on July 14,2015 @ my Dealership. Deanna

According to the 2014 Shop Manual, the DESS Module can be replaced without requiring any programming of the keys. In 2014, the DESS Module simply reads the info in the key and transmits that info to the ECU which does the authentication. Unlike previous years where the DESS Module did the authentication and would therefore require reprogramming the keys if the module were changed. Not the case in '14 and I would assume '15 unless they went back to the earlier type of system in '15. Both the ECU and DESS Module part numbers are different for '15 versus '14 so exactly what they did for '15 is an open question.

In the case of the '14's, replacement would be a 5-minute swap if it weren't for having to remove the frunk!

Update

The dealer called me Saturday and told me they'd opened a case with BRP and they'd been told to go ahead and repair. Parts are ordered and if this stays on course the bike will be ready middle of next week. I told them that's all I could ask for.

Have gone thru all of the above with a complete change of ignition systems and keys last year which worked for a long while, then the DESS started popping up regularly to point of not going away and they installed a new module and reprogrammed the keys. Worked for last few months but now, on occasions, DESS pops up again, but so far, doing on/off a time or two, or three, and it starts. Buds shows nothing. Saga continues!
:yikes:

Once BRP and Steve start talking with your dealer, things will happen quickly. That's been my experience in the past. Keep us informed.
I had a problem and I emailed Steve of BRP and I got the problem fixed ASAP Thanks to Steve. Deanna

Deanna - thanks for the details. I will be contacting the dealer today with this information.
If you get the D.E.S.S. key error on your display screen , take a picture and bring it with you to your dealership. Then your dealership can not say that it did not happen. Also, be sure that your dealership orders the right part #. Which you can find on my thread " Pictures of D.E.S.S KEY CODE ON A 2014RTS-SE6".
Keep us informed on what happen.
Deanna

Thanks - I already pulled the part numbers from your excellent post. I wish I'd taken a pic and I definitely will next time.

I had the D.E.S.S module replaced last month by my dealership( Walt's Sales & Service in Derby, VT) it took them about 45 minute's from start to finish ( reprogram both keys, and replace the D.E.S.S module) and I have a 2014RTS-SE6. The above is covered under manufacture WARRANTY.

Dale, I called my can am dealer on a Tuesday, made an appointment for the following Friday, they had the new D.E.S.S module ( which was sent by ups on Thursday and on Thursday I got a confirmation call from my can-am dealership saying that the part was there,) and I will be there on Friday. It took the dealership about 40mintues to 1 hour to fix, then I was on my way. thanks for the update!

I am glad that I could help you with your D.E.S.S issue. Also, in the future if anything else happens with your spyder( which I hope it does it) take pic's.

Ride safe,

The next time the D.E.S.S pops up on your display on your screen " TAKE A PICTURE and show the pictures to your can -am dealer, and then they can't say it did not happen. Also, go to my( Deanna777) Thread " PICTURES OF D.E.S.S KEY CODE ON A 14RTS-SE6" Since I have I have had the D.E.S.S module replaced, and the keys reprogramed I have not had a problem. Deanna

Final update (I hope)

I was initially discouraged when I saw the DESS replacement module wasn't shipping from Canada until Wednesday evening, but it was received by the dealer yesterday at 10:30, and I got a call today letting me know my bike is ready. So, despite my initial complaints I can say that Hall's Motorsports in Mobile, AL definitely got into action after the case was opened. Thanks Steve at BRP.

Assuming that I don't get the DESS error again, I will consider this case closed.

Conclusion (I hope)

First, kudos to [email protected] and to Hall's Motorsports in Mobile AL for getting my problem cleared up.

I got a ride down to Mobile from Birmingham Saturday morning (thanks UrsaMajor!), and picked up the bike. No DESS issue, so I'm assuming all is well. I'm counting on never seeing this again although others on the forum.

Thanks for all the advice I got from here.

Please explain......" No DESS issue "..........Are they saying you didn't have one ????........or do you mean " they said they fixed it, by re-placing the broken one " ? ? ?.............BECAUSE IF IT SHOWED ON YOUR SCREEN.....you had a problem and it is logged into your spyder's computer and can be retrieved by BUDS !!!!................Mike

I mean that I brought the bike in with a DESS error, the dealer replaced the DESS module, when I picked the bike up (and ever since then) the problem has not shown up.

Concerning the logging of the error - the dealer claimed that the DESS error hadn't shown up in the log. I got the error at least a dozen times over the three hours I tried to keep starting my bike a couple of weeks ago, but they didn't find it listed. I find that very disturbing and am thankful for Deanna's advice of taking a picture of the dashboard when the error shows up. I'll definitely do that next time if it happens again.
