• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Curious.......

On my 2012 RT Limited the glove box has an insert tray with what looks like a styrofoam outer liner (approx. 3/8” thick). This insert tray looks to have about 20-25% less capacity than the original tray. I suspect the purpose of the insert tray is to reduce the amount of heat build up in the glove box. Can anyone confirm this? Also, does anyone stored items in the glove box with the insert tray removed?

Had same theroy i noticed though when i had the tupperware off the inner is also insulated. I ran with mine out for a while but it has not been really hot here and no issues so far. My phone doesnt fit with the liner in. I would put somthing in it (small thermometer?) and go for a ryde on a hot day. I am going to check it out on a really hot day when one comes.

Yes & Yes

In 2010, many RT owners complained about all the engine heat in the glove-box compartment area. Lamont even used it to keep his breakfast burritoes nice and warm, & shared the pic with us:bowdown: So on the '11 models, BRP put in the foam insert which you posted about. It does help keep the compartment items much cooler than without it, but like you've noticed, the compromise for the solution is taking up so much space. We have removed ours, and it works just fine, just be cautious about what you place in there & you should be fine:thumbup:

As a newbie too, I noticed that yesterday myself. I only accidentally found this out as I was trying to figure out the best way to route a wire for my GPS (TomTom Rider 2).

I will be following this thread to see what other answers you get. You were thinking it might be for heat. I was wondering if it also reduced vibration or something. Your thought makes more sense.

By the way, instead of just labeling your question CURIOUS.... it is helpful to be more specific. There have been so many posts over time that when people do a TOPIC search (with glove box as the search words) your thread will never show up in the search results. If they search TOPIC and the body of messages, it will, but some people will miss out on finding your question (and hopefully, subsequent answers).

I have only owned my RT-S SM5 for several weeks and have found this FORUM great for all kinds of information. Searching for information is part science and part guesswork since you have to select your keywords carefully. To whittle down the results, I sometimes just search the TOPIC heading. If I had done that in this case, I would have missed this.

I actually cut a hole in my insert and mounted the garage door opener in there. With the back end of it exposed to engine heat; no issues so far!

It's just an option to give you more room...or in the other case, less.....

Do not store Chap Stick in the "top oven" it kind of becomes Chap Liquid in a hurry :roflblack: I put my garage door opener in it but unlike Bob mine is just in there loose which I found handy as the clip on the back of it doubles as a money clip and keeps your money from flying out if you open the compartment. I also sometimes put hard candy in there to snack on on long trips.

As was said, your theory is correct about the purpose of the insert. I took mine out the first day home. My 2010 didn't have one, and I prefered the space. The glovebox gets hot from the top , even with the insert.

Garage door opener and ear plugs with the bottom lined with a piece of cloth. Cell phone got way to hot in the little oven last summer.

You have MONEY???
 :roflblack:

I have a 2011 with the foam insert. I'd like to carry a small point-and-shoot camera in there but I'm worried it will fry. What do you guys think?

I think it will fry, too. Sun beating down on the glovebox lid gets the box as hot or hotter than the engine. That just isn't good for plastic or electronics.

Remotes (4 of them), plus sunscreen stick, mostly in stick form. Sometimes liquid. I have a little trick- many times I leave the glovebox 'ajar' to let some air flow in and around it. Makes me a bit hotter but saves the oven effect. All of this is why I'm trying to conjure up exhaust fans on the bottom to see if I can get the heat out of the glove box area.
