Cruise control not working after replacing switch - does it need to be coded with BUDS to work? Any ideas?

I have a 2020 RT Limited. I had to replace the cruise control switch because my sleeve got caught on it and ripped it off. I first tried a switch assembly that I got from eBay that came with the throttle/grip. I tried to swap both the switch assembly and grip with the used one I got, but the cruise did not turn on. Everything else worked. On another group, somebody said that I needed to keep the same throttle sensor, so I swapped the throttle with my original. That still did not work. Everything but the cruise control worked. I returned the part and ordered a brand new one but I still have the same problem. The cruise just will not turn on. No indicator on the dash, it will not set.

Does anyone else know what to try next? In my shop manual, it does not indicate which fuse controls the cruise. I tested them all with a voltmeter and could not find one that was blown. Will the new switch have to be coded with BUDS for it to work?

Hey AJ. Just checking on the obvious here - when you tried out the cruise control you were going faster than 25 - 30 MPH, right? Next, because you have a shop manual, you can read how the cruise works. The switch commands from the cruise switch on the right hand side, are sent to the left side multi-function switch and there, converted to CAN. Thus, there is no fuse for cruise control. It's all done by the ECM and the throttle by wire operation. No coding by BUDS2 needed. The cruise switch is just a switch. However, it can be tested with BUDS2 just like any other switch in order to see if the switch contacts are functioning. You also have a table in your shop manual that tells you how to test the switch at the harness connector with a multi-meter.

I have noticed a discrepancy in the manuals when they describe dash indications for cruise ON and Cruise SET. Just take the bike out and try it.

Yes, I took it out on the road and was going highway speed. Will not set. Before all this the indicator on the dash would at least work when it was on or off even when stopped. It doesn't come on at all.

My cruise control does not immediately set when pressing the set button up. I have to press and hold the set button for maybe half a second and then wait as the engine increases RPM and the speedometer begins to show a faster speed, then release the button when the speedometer reaches the desired speed. After it is set, then it will return to that speed, but only if I take it slightly past the set speed and then flick the set switch up again. Then it slowly settles back to the speed it was set on. After turning the engine off or switching the cruise control off, it has to be set again. Running with the cruise on at the speed it is set to, pressing down on the set switch will slowly reduce the set speeds. It doesn't work like other cruise controls I have used.

The same details for adjusting the cruise speed are printed on page 24 of my 2019 Can Am Owners Guide book. I never set the cruise speed until I have reached highway speeds of at least 50 MPH or more. Not sure it works at lower speeds like in town traffic. I would not have the cruise engaged inside city limits anyway.

Don't know if 2019 cruise works the same as 2020 either.

This is not an issue with not knowing how the cruise control works. The switch was damaged and replaced. Now the cruise doesn't work at all.

That is very small gauge wire and the force when the switch was accidentally pulled out of place may have separated the wires inside the insulation. It may be a short distance on down the wires from where they connect to the switch. A continuity check of the wires would be the only way to find that.

The entire switch assembly was replaced. I appreciate your willingness to offer suggestions, but it's clear you don't understand the issue or how the assembly connects to the rest of the wiring harness. The entire assembly includes the on/off switch, the hazard light switch, the start button, and the cruise control switch. The switch assembly has about a 2' long wire harness that connects to the rest of the motorcycle on the right side. The whole thing was replaced. Is it possible that two different switch assemblies that I have tried are bad? That seems unlikely.

I'm still trying to find the answer to this, so if you have seen this problem, please comment! Thanks.

The right control cluster does not need to be initiated in BUDS when replaced. Only the throttle sensor does. You could also use BUDS to diagnose the switch inputs to see what is not working.

No, it works fine. Cruise was working fine until I had to replace the right switch assembly.

Did you have to de-pin the connector to run it through the frame?

I know the left hand switch connector has to go through the frame and requires de-pinning on an RT, I don't know if the right hand does.

If you did, I would start looking at that connector and the pins.
