• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Couple of questions re: multi-day trips and belt guards. Thoughts please!

Multi day trips. GO FOR IT.... Belt guard, am running stock, did ask another poster for information to there set up. Will see what happens. I have never liked full gravel on the Spyder so avoid it all all costs, my experience. That being said WANT TO GO TO ALASKA, so may have a problem.
 
Keep your daily mileage goals at a reasonable level. 300-350 is comfortable, as you're going to get beaten up on a bike far more than in a car. Stop early, smell the roses, have a nice dinner and leave some time along the road to explore and make friends.

Everyone has a different idea of what is comfortable. I agree with the chip-seal advise and the belt guard is a good idea. Still, even with a belt guard you need to be very wary of the chip-seal demon.

But for distance, find your own sweet spot. Some days I can do 1,000 miles and I feel like I could do 1,000 more (not true but just saying). Other days I'm done at 500 or 600 miles. Just try not to put yourself in a position where you HAVE to go a long way just in case you do fizzle early.

I too have an RS (2008). People tell me I need to get an RT. Love the RT. Just not for me.

I have Short windshield (Hey! It's a Motorcycle! I want to battle the wind! If I want a huge windshield I'll drive my car!), and stock seat (which I'm told will kill the average rider but I like it fine). Pull back bars and hwy pegs give me a great deal more distance in the saddle.

One big advantage to riding by yourself is you can do everything your way. Though I still prefer to ride with a partner. If your riding styles clash it can be less than enjoyable.

I'm looking into several solo distance rides this year and was wondering what solo adventures some of you have had......
I was also wondering about the benefits of installing a belt guard on my Spyder.

I often take long trips solo. Have to, because when I ride with the "Girl Posse" they get upset when I stop every time I see a good picture. I also have an issue with frequent stopping on the side of the highway for whatever.
Recent solo adventures:
Nova Scotia (on the Spyder, from home in S.E. Michigan)
St Louis and other parts of Rt 66 (on my 750cc Honda)

As for the belt guard: I live in Michigan. The roads are allegedly paved, but often are not. Most years a pebble or three (hundred) hit my car windshield, flung there by a car racing down the (paved) freeway. Covered trucks are often covered with only a Kleenex or two, dropping whatever trash or dirt they are carrying onto our "paved" roads. :banghead:

But it is beautiful here!

I think the belt guard is cheap insurance for an expensive belt/sprocket repair. On the solo trip-- bring $$$$.

:agree: Look at the smooth spyder back rest will do you great too, there are a number of belt guards that will off the peace of mind, you may want to try a combo belt tensioner (kills vibration)& add to belt guard. Keep somebody informed to your location & destination eta's. Keep a list of contacts & medical info handy. $$$$good clean card if you know what route, look up dealers along & have their info handy too, they always good place to stop & stretch legs ask best roads/place to eat or visit. Additional camera & take memento pics of your trips.

Belt guard

I live on a gravel road and on occasion (planned or not) I ryde on graveled roads. Had belt guard on my '10 RT and put one on my '14 RTS. Combined over 110k miles with never an issue. So I consider a belt guard a must have. I buy Spyderpops guard. :thumbup:
 
Belt guard is a inexpensive item to protect your belt.

I just got the Belt Guard from Spyder Pops for my 2015 RTS . can not get it to position where it will not either hit the tire or the belt. Any problem with the one you put on yours Cruzr Joe?
