Corbin Seats Riding Position?

Looking at the corbin seats and have read tons of posts about them. My question is about riding position. Does this seat force you into a riding position which is uncomfortable for someone without the risers. I know quite a few have the NMN Risers along with the corbin seat, but Im wondering how the seat would work with no risers installed.

I dont really like the looks of the risers, but how they would actually feel is something I need to experience by riding a bike with them on.

Im holding on purchasing anything until the International bike show in Chicago this Sat, where maybe, just maybe, there will be a can am with a few accessories on it such as the comfort seat, backrest rack combo, ect that I can sit on and such instead of just stare at pics all day and try to imagine if I would like it.

Any feedback will be helpful, meanwhile, I will swim through the many posts and continue trying to dig up some answers.

I can't speak to the Corbin seat, but Nancy's comfort seat did force her to sit back in the seat farther (she used to slide forward to reach the bars with the 1" BRP riser). That forced us to add the ESI risers. She is only 5'2", though, so height has a lot to do with it. If you already sit against the bumstop, you may be OK. The comfort seat will sit you back about an inch, and up about an inch...not sure about the Corbin. Being able to sit on one is your best bet. Most are stock at the IMS, however. Maybe we'll see you in Chicago, Saturday.

When I talked with Mike Corbin about me modding my seat he said they built the seat for stock bars and at the time there were no risers that sat you upright. I think you'll be fine if you're keeping the stock bars.

My thinking is I need a passenger backrest, and having taken a 3000 mile trip in a 5 day span, the stock seat SUCKS for long distances.

Soooooo..... I figured instead of spending 500+ for just the can am backrest now and wanting a seat in the future, I could get the corbin seat and buy a backrest for the passenger, but swap it for me when she isnt riding.

Im not sure if I would benifit from the backrest as much not having the risers, but it just seems like needing a seat AND a backrest makes the corbin the best bang for my buck, benifiting me and the wife.

corbin seat and backrest

My 2008 GS has the corbin seat with backrests for driver and passenger. Without the 2 inch risers I was uncomfortable trying to utilize the backrest. The riding position was un-natural. Lower back against the rest and upper body tilted forward to reach the bars. The 2 inch rise made a difference. Now I am debating about removing the 2 inch risers and adding ESI 3, 4 or 4.5 risers. The 2 inch risers installed under the bars works well but when I am against the backrest the lower dash view is blocked and there is not a good rear view in the mirrors. Not really important to see the clock or odometer but would like a better rear view. Sitting on another :spyder2:with risers and mirror extensions but stock seat gave me a good rear view. Corbin seat took awhile to break-in but now fits well and quite happy I have it. 1350 miles in 2.5 days and no monkey butt. 5'8' and heavy.

I had the same thought. Why spend so much on just the backrest when I will probably want a new seat later anyway. I do really like the look of the brp backrest tho, really goes with the spyder. There is a new sponsor to the site that is going to be making a dual backrest seat for the spyder, and the backrests look to be slightly larger than the corbin.

had the same problem (until)

Hi I have the 09 se5 and I have the corbin seat and had the same problem. all the cash spent and unable to sit back and relax, I a'm also 5'2 the hasband says all that money spent ( can't have this). we have the riser already on stock bars. then took stock bars off and installed 7 inch regular motor cycle handlebars and bingo I sit straight up and all the way in my seat , with that said my corbin seat in very comforible and I have (spina bifida)the reason why I ride three wheels and besides that my spyder rocks. handle bars from kewlmetal:yes:

The Corbin seat will initially make you feel like you're sliding forward. After the break-in time this goes away. Give it a good 1,000+ miles and it will just keep getting better. I LOVE my Corbin seat. I did 5,000 on the stock seat--- the rest all on the Corbin--- so 26,000 miles on the Corbin and it's GREAT.

On the backrest-- this takes awhile to get used to. I originally felt like I had to keep pushing myself back against it-- thus keeping my arms stiff pressing on the handlebars to move my body back.

After the break-in this feeling subsided as I was no longer sliding forward. I now like having the backrest on, unless I'm doing some performance riding-- then into the trunk it goes!

On the risers---- if you get the ESI ones in the black you won't even notice them after a week-- nor will anyone else. They make a HUGE difference - can't recommend them enough. Not sure about the other brands - I'm sure they work well too - but some look pretty hideous IMO.

So in short-- plan on feeling the 'sliding forward' thing for awhile with your new Corbin... after that you'll love it! Your butt will thank you!

seats

Corbin make a good seat, Ultimate makes a better seat.
Corbin customer service sucks, Ultimate was top notch.

Hi Hartsock,

Although you don't say it I guess you have an RS like I do. Regardless of which seat I have, I wasn't comfortable leaning forward. I put 5" HeliBar raisers on my Spyder so I could sit up nice and straight. Riding position is more important to me than looks. I finished my seating conversion with a taller windshield and Seal FloorBoards to give my RT a cruiser feel. What a difference on long rides.

Ride in comfort,

John

Corbin seats

I suggest that you find someone with a Corbin seat and at least sit on it to see how you like it. I installed one on my 2008 SE5 GS along with the Helibar and a 1" OEM riser for the handlebar. I found that the Corbin seat does not let me sit to the rear enough. It also tends to make me slide forward and that's not a comfortable position for me. I'm always pushing myself back. I am in the process of redesigning a seat that matches my HD Ultra Glide. It's comfortable and I can ride it all day without my back hurting. More than I can say about the Corbin seat. I also installed Corbin side cases and they also have mounting defects. The RH case lowers the muffler down so much that it drags on the pavement on every bump. The special mountings included for the side cases positions the side cases too close to the Spyder causing the cases to rub against the Spyder. I corrected this problem by heating and bending the mountings to move the side cases outwards about 3/8". I have facilities to do that. I also blocked up the rear shock absorber about 7/8" to get the muffler off the ground. This alteration did not affect the steering or suspension. So best you try out seats before buying Corbin.
