There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Cooling Towels...

With all the extreme heat yet lots of folks keep on ryding, I am curious if anyone is using the "Cooling Towels" seen in stores and online. These are made by various outfits including Frogg Toggs. If anyone has experience using these, tell us about it...

This is what we use where I work

http://www.amazon.com/Chill-Its-670...-2-catcorr&keywords=chill+its+Cooling+Bandana

At work (Major Automotive Manufacturing Plant over 3 million SQFT) we're provided the Chill-Its brand of cooling bandanas since our facility is dated and we don't have air conditioning and with all the equiptment running in the summer time, it often reaches temps of 120 degrees plus and in years past, employees would drop like flies from heat stroke.

These do work to help keep you cooler than without using them, thats true.

One small caveat tho: I've found that the first time you use them, they usually mix with your sweat and create a kind of slime feeling where ever they are placed. I usually where mine around my neck and I can't stand that slimy feeling, but it usually goes away after the first few uses. Its a good idea to move them around and even try different placements on your body to see where they work best for you. Believe it or not, Ive wrapped them around my ankles and that location works pretty well too. You want to place them over main arteries (like in the neck or leg) that way they help cool the blood flowing under them and that in turn helps to cool your intire circulation system and in turn, helps to lower your core temperature. Mind you now, we're only talking a couple of degrees, but every little bit helps, right?

Second the Chill-It towel endorsement, I always buy a couple at the start of every summer, toss 'em at the end of the year.

Tip to avoid that slimy feeling: soak and dry them a frew times before you first use them. When I get a new one, I open them up, wet them down, then just hang them somewhere to dry. Repeat that 2-3 times before I first use it.

Also, I wet them down, then stuff them into a ziploc bag that I put in the crisper drawer in the fridge. Before riding, I take them out, they're cold AND damp, feel great. Once home, I just wet them down and put them in the fridge again. (Note that if you plan on stopping along your ride, it helps to bring a ziploc bag along to store the towel once you get to your destination).

I just bought the Frogg Togg Towels for me and my wife. Haven't had a chance to use them yet. They would have to help. We'll see :dontknow:

I picked up a couple of Frogg Togg Chilly Pad Towels and hope to give them a serious try this weekend. they can be cut as needed and are large enough (33x13) that one may be enough for 2 people.

After experiencing heat exhaustion after using everything mentioned above, I bought a First Responder vest that has 16 packets in it. Thankfully it worked. Expensive but worth every penny. Texas is beyond hot and I go on longggggggggggg rides. Love it!

how long do the vest keep you cool? Do you have a link? thanks

This is the vest I have

This is the vest for riding. It is shorter in the front than in the back so it doesn't ride up. It has 16 packets........hit this link and it will tell you all about it. If you call, ask for Randy!!! This has made a major difference for me and this Texas heat. It takes the heat away from your body. I wear it the entire time I'm riding, which is usually 6-8 hours. I "recharge" it by simply dousing it with ice water. you wear a tshirt under it, then the vest and something over that. It is hard to explain how it works but it does!

Have been using these also..............cut them in half, long ways, added a slot close to one end so we can pull the opposite end thru the slot to secure it around your neck and away we go. Works great!:2thumbs:

Got to try one out this weekend, and it definitely had a cooling effect around my neck and chest.... maybe I just need to wrap my entire right foot & leg plus my whole head and I may be set for some hot weather riding.... :roflblack:
but probably I will just limit my rides to early hrs for a while and wait to enjoy the Fall!

Saturday I did about 110 mi roundtrip with full gear in the hottest part of the day and it was enough for me. I am starting to understand why some people use half helmets, no sleeves, and shorts but cant quite bring myself to that yet.

I had a vest that I used in Europe, it circulated cold water through tubing in the vest, the pump could be run on AA batteries, or run off the bikes electrical system. Now all I have to do is find the box they're packed in, I know its in one of the boxes in my garage somewhere.
