• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Continuing DESS Issue?

C
Deanna, sorry for the late reply.
2015 RT-L, 18000 miles, 2 error code to date.
I cycled the ignition 5 times (per Bluenight Mike) after the last incident - not happened since.
Wife doesn't trust it
Kinda hoping my Dealer (when I contact them) will bypass the module.
Anyone on this forum do it ? I'll travel :-)

HayRog,
I am the one that posted about the "turning the ignition 5 times on/off.

Update to update in post #34

Defective DESS module replaced, codes cleared, done under extended BEST warranty :D -- good to go :2thumbs:

Replaced with newest version module # 710004916

I just had the newest version, 710004916 go bad. This would be 3rd replacement. They don't have a fix for the dess issue!
This time not under warranty. Not a happy camper. BRP needs to have a recall! 2014 RT-S

If you want I can guide you thru DIYing yourself …. not hard just time consuming because the FRUNK has to come off ( *********** is full of Hooey that it can be changed without re-moving the Frunk ) …. the Module is $135.00 last I checked & no BUDS is necessary ….. Mike :ohyea:

Question about the D.E.S.S

HI,

Has anybody read " MY Thread" D.E.S.S Key Code Again!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Posted 8/13/2015 Replies:771 Views 156,754 31 pages long.

I am the D.E.S.S Queen.

The above thread has some Great ideas/and suggestions about the D.E.S.S. module. I have a 2014 RTS-SE6, spyder, and have had the D.E.S.S module replaced twice under warranty, and the switch replaced once( under warranty).

If I didn't post the above thread no one would have known about the D.E.S.S errors/problems.

I had this issue yesterday 8/18/19 go to you tube and search "Spyder Bad Key Fixed" I tried the fix with the tin foil and it works I did not disassemble the ignition switch as in the video I just wrapped a little tin foil around the trim ring where the key goes and it started just fine no DESS ERROR with a pic of a key
Going to my dealer tomorrow to see what they say..So far I do not think it is in the module or the antenna. At least for this key issue
Thanks
Roger

The tin foil trick is temporary at best. Might get you home from a bad situation but its not a long term fix.

Replacing the DESS module does not permanently fix the issue either, just resets the clock.

So far, the only permanent fix is to have DESS turned OFF. Problem gone.

:agree: …… once the DESS fails, it is the signal that in the near future, it will stop working - PERIOD ….. That is what happened with mine, I had a few failures, but I could re-start it …. then none of the various start procedures would work..... if you are out of warranty, you can buy the part @ cheapcycleparts.com and others, for $135.00 and change it yourself …. you must re-move the frunk ( RT models ) to get access to the module which is a couple of inches above the battery on the firewall ….. good luck ….. I'm no longer concerned about the DESS, because " Joel The Biker " cancelled mine this past Sunday ...He is :firstplace::clap: …… Mike :ohyea:

Some folk are guilty of fake news. It certainly can be changed without removing body panels, I've done it.

However, it is a good idea to relocate the DESS unit incase it fails again and you need easy access to it, so here's my suggestion: The old DESS is up on the frame above the battery and its connector hangs down and is easily reached and disconnected. Disconnect the cable, reconnect the replacement DESS and cable tie it to the top of the battery bracket. Leave the old one in situ, why would you bother removing it?

You need to get it fixed pronto. Once DESS errors once, it will get worse and leave you stranded somewhere.

:agree::agree: …… From what others have reported here, the DESS failure isn't usually catastrophic ie. total & complete failure..... it seems to be a progressive thing, but once it begins the end result will Total...… 3 to 10 or so re-starts, but eventually total failure is the out-come …… good luck …. Mike :ohyea:

Hi, been reading ours an hours of threads regarding the DESS and key Error problems. Is this an issue still continuing? I have a 2014 spider and it appears these issues started then. Can I be comfortable buying a brand new spider that I will not have this issue?

To answer your question, w6ada, I would definitely purchase a new Spyder and not be concerned with the DESS issue.
Based on my own experience, 59K combined miles from riding 2012 and 2015 RTL Ltd's, I have not had this, nor any other mechanical or electrical problem. This is not to say that DESS failure or a different component failure won't happen to me, but I am completely satisfied with my Spyder and do not dwell on what may happen. You should also know that the DESS failure does not happen to every Spyder, I do think it is a minority of bikes that suffer this failure. However, it is good to know of potential problems, such as DESS failure, parking brake not releasing, compartment doors not opening properly, etc. so that if a failure does occur you will be able to address it quickly and knowledgeably.

" Don't be concerned with a DESS failure " ………. I know of at least 75 failures and some multiple times ( and this from this forum ) ….. I hope it never happens to you …… but to suggest it is only a rare occurrence - well, I don't think they are rare and as far as I can tell BRP has not solved the problem …..Yet !! ……...good luck to all ……. Mike :ohyea:

Just a bit of clarification for me please.
I just got a 2014 RT one week ago and have seen the orange screen come up twice. Each time I cycled the key off and then immediately back on and the bike started. Am I headed for failure ?
