Coating on drain plug

When I did my last oil change at 27,000 miles on my 2010 RT I had some black sludge like material on my gold plug magnets, both oil tank and engine. There were no shavings or particles just a smooth black coating of both magnets. I did the oil change at 3,600 miles and I use Amsoil 10-40 motorcycle oil. Is this normal or a potential problem?

From the information you provided I would say no problem. Magnetic drain plugs are there to pick up metal. Discoloration is pretty normal. Does the coating you are referring to wipe off?

In addition to lubricating, oil cools and holds contaminants in suspension until they can be removed by the filter. Particles smaller than 5 micron typically pose no threat to the engine but, overtime, accumulate with other contaminates and will collect on the mag plug. This is the sludge you are referring to. Just wipe it off and reinstall the plug.

This will occur with any oil, however synthetics (AMSOIL) produce far less contaminants than petroleum oil as they are contaminate free out of the bottle unlike petroleum oils.

Wow, you have me thinking here. I to have the gold plugs on both drain bolts and my last change found very little on the engine and almost nothing on the resivoir tank. You have enough mileage that you have done a few changes so if yours have been like like mine and now all of a sudden there is that sludge then I would wonder. My first couple of changes did have the black sludge on the engine drain bolt but then I went to Amsoil and now very little, so ??

The coating "sludge" wiped off easily but the coating seemed heavier than in the past.

IMHO and not to offend anyone, you guys are making a big deal out of nothing. All engines produce sludge, some more than others. There are a multitude of things that can cause sludge, Quality of the filters both air and oil, Engine Temps, accumulation of sludge from petroleum prior to switching to Synthetic and on and on.

The plugs are MAG PLUGS NOT SLUDGE PLUGS. There will always be metallic dust in the oil from normal engine wear and that will be picked up by the magnets. If you starting seeing metal larger than 40 micron, (the largest that can be seen without magnification), you have cause for concern. Some thing else you can do is to cut your filters apart and spread them out. Any lumps you see test them with a magnet.

If you don't want sludge then don't run the engine.

If you are still worried take a sample and have it analyzed.

:agree: A lot of worry over nothing, How many people check the drain plugs on their car, I bet if they look they'll see the same thing. But nobody worries about that.:dontknow:

You are both right, nothing to worry about. Just for the record, I put a magnetic bolt on my car once and it came out clean, not gears in there like our bikes. The Spyder oil does both engine and gearbox. Manual gearboxes in cars have magnets and they get sludge as well, oh well.

I agree, drop the pan on your cars tranny and look at the magnet. You will be amazed. If our Spyders had seperate tranny fluid you would not see as much from the motor. I also use Amsoil, good choice. We used to race ATVs and I have had many ATV motors apart. If Amsoil was the only oil used there would be vertually no wear of any kind.
