Clutch starting to fail on SE5

Holy cow I must really be babying the Spyder. So what are the general ranges for shift with SE5? Just a general rule, don't want to wear out things prematurely.

There are dozens of posts on this subject. For the SE, the rpm should be at or above 3500 rpm after the shift, to keep the clutch fully engaged. That means shifting at around 4500 or above for best results. The Spyder engine comes alive about 5K. If you want maximum performance, don't shift until 6K or 7K or more.

Here is an update. I took my Spyder up to the dealer last Friday and dropped off. I was told that they would look at in on the next Wednesday if not sooner. I've heard nothing. So, I called today, 7-26 and spoke to the service girl on the phone. She said my clutch was toast. Since there was an issue before with a clutch repair, they are waiting to hear back from BRP to see if it will be covered? The Spyder is now on the BEST warranty.

Seems that the previous owner had some sort of clutch/transmission repair on the Spyder. She could not tell me what is was, but according to the computer, something was done according to the records?

I have a ride that I'm supposed to lead on August 10th and I'm hoping I get to lead with my Spyder and not my Tundra. That would suck!

It's Tuesday and just got off the phone with the dealer. They have been given the go ahead to work on the bike from BRP. She told me last week that the clutch was 'toast'. Since there was work done on it before, they had to have the 'go ahead' from BRP to start working on it. What? Huh?

She told me that they haven't open it up yet. Then how did they know the clutch was 'toast'? They will start on it this Thursday.

I talked to the dealer in NC, RPM Cycles yesterday to see what was done? The lady there said it was a recall notice they complied with back in the Summer of 2010 according to their records. There may have been parts that were replaced. The recall was about the clutch sticking and something about added weights?

The girl here said she would call me on Thursday.

My clutch hub shattered in Durango last year. It took a week for repairs. Unless parts are in the states already, they must go through customs coming from Canada. In my case they sent the wrong part from Canada, then found the right part in a US warehouse. Go figure.

They were supposed to start working on the Spyder yesterday. They got busy and haven't touched it? Really? She thinks they will start on Monday. She offered to give it back so I could lead a scheduled ride on August 10th. But the bike is at a point with the clutch I wouldn't get very far. I asked if I could have a loaner but that wasn't up to her to decide.

I have 14 SRA members and a bunch of GA Spyder owners attending my ride to Sequoyah Caverns, AL and to LaFayette, GA for lunch next Saturday. Looks like I may be driving my Tundra for the ride.:banghead:

Hang on in there fellow SRA member. Timing may be off but better now when you are at home than on the road. If you are the road captain then cage it. Not the same I know. Ideally, every ride should have one cage in case someone breaks down or medical problems. This may be a "sign".

Just got off with the dealer...again.
Seems that there is a two part process with BRP. First you must get permission to touch the bike. OK, we got that. They touched it today by taking it apart. The clutch is "toast". Yes, I knew that already.
Now they have to list all the parts it's going to need to fix it. Then the dealer submits the list to BRP to see if they will cover it under the BEST warranty because that's what I have at this point of ownership.
When the dealer gets the OK from BRP, they will order the parts which she said that takes three days to get.
She said she should have the list together by tomorrow afternoon.

So I guess I'll be leading my ride this Saturday in my Tundra. Oh what a joy that will be! :banghead:

Got a call from the dealer this morning. I think the girl had too much coffee! Woooooo! :coffee:
The Spyder repairs had been approved under warranty! Now they are waiting for parts. One part is coming from Canada.

I sure hope I have the Spyder back in time for the Barber's Museum and Race Track event. Running the Spyder on the race track for a hour! I understand Lamont will be attending this fun weekend!

I had called and talked to the girl on Friday and she said they were waiting for two parts that were in the hub in KY and should be there early this week.
Well, I called today, Wednesday, and she said she was waiting for a part that was in the hub in KY. I reminded her that she said that last Friday and it was a flywheel and some sort of gasket? Maybe she should write down what she tells the customer to keep her story straight?

She said she was going to bump some other smaller projects to get my Spyder done by Friday morning. That's when I'm to leave for Birmingham. I asked if I should cancel my reservations for this coming weekend? She said no.

Well I'm hoping it all turns out well and I get my Spyder back after five weeks of waiting. Since it's been over six weeks since I've ridden, I hope I haven't forgotten how to pilot a Spyder?

Got the Spyder on Friday. When I got on at the dealer, the left mirror popped off. The mechanic put it back on. But the top retainer is broken and I knew it wasn't going to stay on. So, I had to duct tape it on for the weekend. That so sucks!
I made a repair myself using some aluminum sheeting. The mirror is hanging on just fine now. I'll still have them order me a new part if they can figure out the part number? We couldn't figure out the fisch at Big#1 in Birmingham for the part? That is so frustrating. :banghead:
From the photo, I did a bit of trimming and bending to get it to fit over and lock down on the knob on the mirror mount.

I have an oil leak on the right side now coming near the cover that says Rotax on it. Nothing leaked before the repairs. There is oil sprayed on the muffler, right side saddlebag and the trailer I was pulling this weekend. Yuck!
My Gorilla alarm is not working. Will have to figure out why?
The trailer connector went dysfunctional over the weekend. The trailer lights wouldn't work so I hung a Power Flare on the back ridding home. Is there a fuse for that circuit?

The battery was replaced for free along with the radiator. I guess when it sits in a shop for 5 weeks the battery may run down? Talked with some people at the SRA event in Birmimgham this weekend and figured maybe they damaged the original radiator removing it?
Everything was covered under warranty for over $1500.

I have a screw missing the holds the Tupperware on and Harvy's heat blocking shield I will pick up at the dealer. They forgot to put it back on.
I have to live with the loud beeping when I turn the bike off till they get the replacement part in for the parking brake sensor.

I'm just so glad to have my BluSpyderByte back!

Wow!
They all must have worked for the phone company in a previous lifetime...
"Fix One; Break One", seems to be their motto up here! :gaah:

What's the sentence for killing a dealer in ALABAMA!!????

My dealer told me between 4000-4500 rpm, hope they were right.

As noted previously on this thread, you want the RPM after the shift to be at least 3500. 4000 is too low. 4500 RPM is right on the edge of enough. Shifting at 5000 RPM or more would be better.

Sounds like it's time for you to find a new servicing dealer. Extreme Propulsion in Cartersville and Mountain Motorsports in Conyers have both received good reports from Spyderlovers members.
