Clanking noise when rear wheel hits bump

I searched and couldn't find much else about this, so I apologize if this has been asked.

Got a 2012 RT, and ever since it was new if I hit a pothole, or any moderate bump at speed there's an awful metallic clanking noise that seems to be coming from under the seat area, maybe forward a bit. The air shock pressure is normal. Just wondering if this is typical, or if something isn't firmly connected under there? I've read about failing rear shocks so I suppose that could be it but I've only got 3,500 miles on it and it's done it since day one.

At slower speeds, or over a more gradual bump (like a neighborhood speed bump) it's quiet, it's the more jarring type bumps that brings out the noise.

Check a thread "Whats this? " where there is a missing bolt by the rear shock. Could be the source of your noise.:dontknow:

If the answer isn't obvious, see your dealer. It is not normal.

Had same thing on 2011 RT at 600mi. Blown shock was the culprit. I forget what exactly was making the noise but it was parts of the shock clanking together.

Thanks guys, it does sound like it's probably the shock. Need to take it in anyway for the revised oil change panel update as well so I'll have them check it out then.

Took it in this week, they replaced the shock and it seems to have done the trick. It also rides a lot better, I think that shock was broken since Day 1 actually.

Go with the Elka's. They last longer and ride better.
