Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Changing SE6 Shifter Position

Because of a problem I am having with my left hand (thumb) I am hoping all you DIYers can point me in the right direction. I have a F3S SE6 and want to move the shifter to the foot as if it were a manual transmission. My thumb can no longer reach the thumb shifter without taking my hand off the grip. Has anyone done this or have any idea how to do it. I have the toe shifter, it came with the floorboards I installed. If I cannot get this done then I will have to put my baby up for sale and that is not a happy thought.:( Thanks!

TRY THIS

IMHO....Because the 1330 engine does not need a lot of shifting take your hand off and use your index finger to shift up........I would try this before considering giving it up........Mike :bbq:..I will try to think up something else though, I have come up with quite a few out-of-the box idea's.......

:agree: That...... or.... Can mount a ring on the downshift side & pull out with index? Not sure the pressure needed to do so but would be easier than moving to foot. Just a matter of reach use some double sided tape & some plastic ( Lego block) to extend the reach wont be pretty but should function. Get creative but not too crazy :roflblack:

You might be able to find some information that is helpful in the "Enabled SpyderLovers" area.
I'm sorry to hear that you're now in this situation: the best of luck to you in finding a solution!

Since you haven't mentioned what the cause of your thumb problem is, you may want to check with an orthotics specialist, if you have one nearby. A wrist hand orthosis may help. I'm not talking about something you pick up at the corner drugstore. Good luck with whatever you decide.

If you could add a paddle of sorts to the up shifter, then you could use the heel of your thumb or the palm of your hand to shift up just by rolling your hand.

:agree: that this might be a good option...

Perhaps if you were to epoxy a piece off of a "Cramp-buster" to it... :dontknow:

Actually: Wylie's suggestion is the simplest one... Start from there, and work your way up to the tougher options.

Cheap Guy Solution

On my Spyder with my left hand in normal position on the bar I can upshift at will with the back of my index finger by pushing away on the downshift lever.

It was my orthotic specialist that caused the issue. He said I had a ruptured tendon. He took one of the two you have in your index finger and moved it to my thumb. After the operation he tells my wife the the tendon wasn't ruptured but did the transfer anyway. So both my index finger and thumb no longer have the movement they once had. He then said 'We' did this backwards and referred me to a neurologist. He has diagnosed me with multifocal motor neuropathy and will start treatment in two weeks.

OMG...Get a lawyer.....with the money you can have a shifter that will work via voice control..........jmho......Mike :bbq:

Hmmm... Is it possible to put a throttle grip on the left grip? That and some type of paddle could do it. Thanks!

There is no reason why a neat, simple electronic foot shifter can not be fabricated. Seems a small design of a box with a shaft running through it and the shift lever secured on the shaft is pretty simple. From that you need on switch to shift up and another to shift down, wire it in parrallel to oem to get it working.

I had a look inside our SE6 shifter on the RT, actually I lubed the pivots since it felt like crap from Can Am. I seem to recall it is simply a paired lever that hits a switch to shift, nothing very complicated or crazy out at the grip.

Thanks for all your input

I knew you guys would come up with a number of ideas and I thank each of you. After I start my treatment I will find which direction to head in. I'll keep you informed as to what I end up doing. Thanks again!

I think you are talking orthopedic, which is not the same as orthotic. Orthotic specialists cannot perform surgery, only design, sell, or apply orthoses (an externally applied devise). In any case, I hope all turns out well for you.

Oops... My mistake, you're correct. I did go to my therapist and she made a molded form to move my thumb out further, but it starts hurting within 15 or 20 minutes. That was my first attempt to fix the issue. Thanks!

That's good to know. I haven't dismantled anything yet, but if that is true it should not be hard to run the needed wires down the frame to a switch. Thank you!
