CHAD Windshield Installation Issues

I installed the CHAD yesterday afternoon. First thing I noticed was the welds on the main bracket. While the welds appear to be good and solid welds, there also appears to be no effort to brush off the residue that splatters on the metal pieces before painting. This is only on the side that faces forward when mounted. Fortunately, we purchased the windshield that is black on the bottom half, so you can't see this sloppy welding once the installation is complete. If you order the clear windshield, this will present a sloppy appearance.

Next was the misaligned bolt holes on the same bracket. These are supposed to line up with the mounting hole for the original windshield. They are not properly aligned and required all four to be enlarged to allow the bolts to match up to the holes. You are using the original windshield bolts to mount the new bracket. Don't try to fudge them in from an angle. The holes must be made of aluminum & will easily strip if you try to get a bite with the screw and force-flex the bracket into place. This won't work. Just enlarge the holes in the four legs of the mounting bracket until it works. I used the washers that were originally on the bolts, so there's no seeing the enlarged holes.

The rest of the install went as expected and the windshield seems to work very well. It also look very nice on the Spyder. For me, it knocked out all of the wind noise that is generated at my helmet, which is what I was looking for. Since it's my wife's Spyder, I hope it's as effective for her. She says she loves it too.

Overall, I'd say it's a good mod & one I'd recommend, but would think for the price ($350 for the clear/black shield), you'd get better workmanship on the mounting bracket.

Also installed a CHAD

I also just installed a CHAD. Installation was pretty simple but I did have to bend the bottom two tabs on the bracket in order for all 4 screws to line up.

I am currently riding with the shield in a few different positions looking for the spot that really fits my style.

It's too early to tell if I will like it long term, but so far it is looking good.

my 2X chad installation issues--someone please advise

We also had the same concerns about the sloppy welds (I emailed Industries 7 and suggested they needed to improve quality control on the welds. And golly gee the same thing with the bolts. But here is our BIG PROBLEM. The holes in the windshield do not align properly with the bracket. Which makes the windshield about 1.5" off center. My Spyder looks like she has a crooked smile. I checked all the bracket measurements with a rule and also set a level on it. Despite the issues with the bolts-it is on straight and even. What is really awful is this is the second windshield from Industries7. And postage international from TX to Canada is about $40. So, now we are trying to decide what to do? Should we ship it back to noMagicNeon, ask for a reimbursement? Send it back to Industries7 and try once more? Is there some secret to installation that you guys know about? I really want a windscreen that will protect me from bobble head and unbuttoning my shirt at high speeds. Ok, so I did learn to wear t shirt or a sports bra so I am not flashing passing motorists. What to do? Araignee88

We purchased the madstad Robo brackets from Mark at Madstad Engineering , He is a legend at wind management , especially in the Suzuki field...(okay I'm biased we used his stuff on our V-strom and it was magic...) we could not be happier with the operation of his brackets. He was in this adjustable windshield game way before everyone else.
http://www.madstad.com/ and I just saw a review here : http://www.spydertalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=11113

We also like dealing with the guy who actually designs and makes the brackets, packages them and ships them...

I am 5'7 and my husband is 6'2 , it makes the ride perfect for us and doesn't look like an android like some other shields..(f1)

The picture of the CHAD bracket looks suprisingly like Marks bracket he made years ago for the V-strom , those worked great so I would suspect the CHAD works well , perhaps its off an 1/8" at the bottom , leading to a bigger tilt at the top. That would be barely noticeable at the bottom but by the time it gets to the outer edge of the shield it would be exagerated.

I can believe that.

:agree:
After riding for a couple of days - and more miles to come in a few minutes, I am still amazed at how well the RoboBrackets work - they are like magic.

Here is a link to Brian's experience with Mark's prototype and testing:

And here is another thread on them: http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13534&highlight=Robobracket

There are some other threads too, just search for "RoboBrackets".

And, if you notice, Mark stands 100% behind his work, "Satisfaction is guaranteed".

Hate to hear that about the CHAD

Hello Mark and Araignee88m,
It bothers me that you and others are having this issue with the CHAD. $350 is not pocket change for me. I have definately considered the CHAD but I'm still on the fence. Please keep us informed of what goes down. So Araignee, are you having to pay for the shipping each time? Or only once?
Again, please keep us informed. Has anyone looked at what the BBB has to say about Industries 7? I'm gonna take a look after I get home.

I had one of the first ones... last November. No problems then, or now. Maybe something has changed?

:agree:
Mine fit just fine. :dontknow:

CHAD

I just completed my installation of the CHAD (used it today on a 150 mile ride) and everything fit pretty well. I did trace the threads with a 6mm tap before I installed the bracket and maybe that helped start the screws, but the bracket fit fine. The only thing I noticed is the top of the windshield is not perfectly straight across the top, it is a little lower on the right side ( no one would ever notice except me), if it were rounded off would be no way to tell. Overall I am pleased with the CHAD, it looks good and works very well and yes I would recommend it based on my experience.

You're right about the right hand side. I think I mentioned that a few months back; at that time only one other member agreed.

No idea what they are thinking...

So after a short ride and trying a few adjustments I noticed something looked off about the CHAD. So I took it off and measured it, it's almost .5 inches taller on one corner compared to the other. So I starting looking closer and the shield is not even molded symetrically. I layed it down on a flat surface and on one side it's flush to the ground, follow the black directly across to the other side and it curls up so I can fit full fingers under it. It's blatantly mis-shapen.

It would appear that the quality issues are not limited to just the bracket. I am seriously bummed.

Hopefully either NMN or Industry 7 will help me get one that is right.

I had such high hopes for the CHAD...

Yes, I have also noticed that. I guess that the molding of Lexan is not an exact science. I think one could adjust the shield with a little heat or round off the corners (I have thought of that) but you always run the risk of ruining a $350 shield that works so well.:dontknow:

Installed my CHAD today. I am thoroughly pleased with the way it looks and I had no install problems. The only issue I had was, with all 4 rubber washers between the metal brackets, I could not move the windshield to play with the adjustment while on the side of the road. I removed the bottom 2 and can now move it, though not easily. Hopefully it will hold it's position.
