• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

CB Antenna Help

Simple question I hope. Is the standard RT Limited CB Antenna considered a No Ground Plane (NGP) Antenna?

Thank for your help

As Snowbelt said, no.

Contrary to some suggestions in earlier threads, it is not easy to increase the ground plane on a Spyder. There simply isn't enough steel in a Spyder to create a good ground plane. I tried using aluminum foil duct tape to enlarge it, but it turns out aluminum isn't very good, although according to some info I came across it should be. Or it might be even with the entire under seat area covered with aluminum tape the ground plane size just isn't large enough to get the SWR down below 3. My tests indicate the SWR of the stock BRP antenna is way too high, but it can't be changed since the stock antenna isn't tune-able. A high SWR limits the transmission distance, and can damage a CB. My suspicion is that Radio Sound has made the CB rugged enough to tolerate a high SWR as one attempt to resolve earlier CB problems.

An NGP antenna has limitations/restrictions of its own, some of which I didn't know when I installed mine. The coax is special design and has to be about 17' long, which I knew. It doesn't like to be near metal, which I didn't know. This creates a challenge when installing it on the Spyder. However, based on my experience so far I'd say it's well worthwhile to use one.

That is my thread Snowbelt references above. Here's the other thread I started where I discuss my CB problems. http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?91922-CB-PTT-squeal-how-was-it-solved
