Cat Bypass - I want this

Starting to remind of the Harley again, putting on items that are not needed. Now I could understand a better tune but there is nothing out there yet for the 1330. :yikes:

Well, I'm just thinking of a nicer note on my Spyder. No, it's not needed.

(It's actually fairly low on my list)

Would you share a part number or specs, please?

The Baffle is made by Jim at "Big City Thunder" in Mathews, NC. Phone # 704-847-1222.
The baffle part # is QBL 1750 and you will need a Rienhart adapter/sleeve to take up the difference between the baffle and slightly larger inside diameter of the bypass.
This fits into the front of the bypass pipe just behind the flared gasket bell.
Some minor trimming/sanding
attachment.php
is required on the sleeve for it to fit into the pipe.
The total price with shipping was $85 and they sent a really nice T-shirt also.

550 cord

Put the top spring on first...screwdriver. Then the bottom spring...spring puller. Here is a photo of my spring puller which is a piece of 550 cord.

I have the same tool, only mine is od green. Run it out the back a couple of feet, and have a helper pull it into place. Easy job. I have done a few. Go for it! If you get in trouble, call. Joe

You will not find this on there web site as it is considered a special application. You will need to call Big City Thunder and talk with Jim to order. This will ensure you get the correct baffle for your pipe.

Agree

I doubt that it's a design flaw. Remember; we're not supposed to be removing it anyway! :roflblack:

On post number 62,339 you stated the obvious, we're not supposed to remove them. I'm not sure why so many bother to go to the trouble and expense to remove the catalytic converter since it doesn't improve the performance or the gas mileage. On a personal note, I enjoy the sewing machine sound that allows me to enjoy my XM radio in my helmet. I know what exhaust sounds like and I prefer the sound of music.

This is considered a special applacition by Jim at Big City Thunder, give him a call he will take care of you. If you do a search on this site "Big City Thunder" you will find the post with picture of the baffle installed in the pipe.

You ride your motorcycle (Sewing machine) and I'll ride mine. :lecturef_smilie:

Thank you. I'll give him a call.

:agree: To each its own!!! There are lots of mods that are not needed or don't serve any purpose other than making the bike ur own and different from the other thousands of similar bikes out there.
as for the cat bypass mod.. That is on my list of to do's right after my rims and tires mod. I did see a video from bam I believe and I love the sound of it with the OEM exhaust. I run a two brothers dual carbon fiber exhaust on my 2013 st-s and I loved it. Some people thought it was loud and ubnoxious .... Me on the other hand thought it made the bike look and sound a thousand times better. :2thumbs: Wish two brothers will get it together and develop a carbon fiber slip on for the f3 or even a dual one that would work this time for the f3, Fingers crossed ... But in the meantime lamonster or pit bull bypass will do . Good luck with your install and keep us posted on the progress... That way I know what to expect when I finally decide to do it myself. ;)

cat bypass

I firmly believe that your right to swing your arm ends where my nose begins. I translate that to anyone riding by my window at four AM with a noise loud enough to wake me up and rattle my windows. Any sound above 100 decibels is harmful to your ears, especially if continuous. Many people, myself included find any loud noise objectionable whether it be Bethovens 5th, a boombox in an auto that rattles my windows or a straight piped Harley. Many communities have ordinances posted prohibiting Jake brake usage except in an emergency, there are laws on the books in many states prohibiting loud mufflers, which are seldom enforced- so far. Numerous upscale gated neighborhoods prohibit any motorcycles, period, even for the residents, could it be because of the mufflers on the Harleys? which have given the motorcycle community a bad image in the eyes of much of the non riding population [which by far outnumbers us riders]. Now we have a new brand of bikes, albeit a tiny, but growing number of bikes-roadsters- wanting to out perform the loudest Harleys in loudness. I foresee a day when the non riding majority, pi--ed off by the noise, will pass draconian laws that will limit much of our freedoms as riders.
That said I plan to replace my cat converter on my 1330 and replace it with a straight pipe and a tiny automotive type muffler to keep up the back pressure, eliminate the backfiring and keep my oem muffler so that I wont be one of the ones who will pi-- off the non riding, voting public.

Very little performance or sound increase.
What you do get is 200 degrees less heat under your gas tank!
And down here in Vegas during the summer 200 less degrees is worth every penny :)

Note: If you are thinking of a Two Brothers exhaust, they RECOMMEND not removing the cat.
AJ

I'm giving this mod some thought also.

What are the pros and cons?? Is the proformance increase worth the cost?? How about the noise increase?? Has Bob done this mod????

Ya know its either this mod or gun mods. Cost is simular.

Pam, I have a 2015 RT Limited, with some various mods, and at Biketoberfest this year, I had www.Spyder1attitude.com install his catalytic replacement pipe, and kept the stock Spyder muffler. It did not make it loud, but did give it a little sound. I can ride all day without any ill effects from noise, can hear my radio or gps with no problem. It seems to me to have made my performance a bit sharper, not head snapping, but a little better. It does reduce the heat as when you see your catalytic converter you will understand. And you loose about 20 pounds of usless weight. I wouldn't say mine Spyder backfires, or even pops and cracks, but woud describe it as a burble when decelerating. I don't know anything about the baffle that some folks are telling you that you need, Big Thunder, but when Schultzy installed mine I asked about reprograming the ECU and he said all you have to do after removing the Cat. is to idle your Spyder for 15 minutes and then shut it down and leave it sit for 15 minutes, and when you turn it back on, it will reprogram its self. It seems to have done that. I can't speak of gas mileage as my Spyder is new, and still breaking in, but, my mileage runs from 32 mpg to as high as 38 mpg depending on the type of gas and the octane rating, the best being real gas (non-ethanol) .

This is just my humble experience, and I feel that it is your ride, and you should be able to do what you want with it as long as you don't bother anyone else, This set up will not rattle windows, or wake people up, and I'd bet if you opened your house windows you wouldn't know when I rode past your house. It's a shame we aren't closer, I'd let you ride my Spyder and you could see for your self. You might give Spyder1Attitude call and talk to him, he is one of our sponsors and travels around to the get togethers installing his own brand of mufflers. He will install a cat delete pipe on your bike, let you ride it, and then take it off if you don't like it.

Good luck,
David

Devious56, had you ever considered changing your screen name, and it is a very cool screen name now, to Devious1

PK

Thank you I think, but no, I've had the Devious56 for a long time now, Devious is what my initials say if you run them together "DVS", and the 56 represents what I drove for about 19 years, and built 90% of myself, sometimes 3 or 4 times before getting it right. It was a hard decision getting rid of it, but I needed something that would tow my boat and give me better than 10 miles to the gallon.

the top spring is the hardest to get off and on. the spring puller is a must for that one. the other two are simple. fifteen minute job at the most!!

:agree: That is exactly what I did at first. Also for NO cost, took the back trim off the muffler and with a sawzall cut the two little pipes flush with the cap on the muffler. I then cut the center piece off the trim price and used a dremel to smooth the opening, it is now a large rectangle instead of two smaller squares.

Louder? No; different, yes changed the tone is about all. Not sure what a baffle would do to deepen the sound, would think it would lessen it. For now I'm happy with what I've done... as is wife !

Akropovic

Well, I'm just thinking of a nicer note on my Spyder. No, it's not needed.

(It's actually fairly low on my list)

Pam

My riding buddy has the same 2014 RT as mine. Rusty had the Akropovic exhaust put on when he bought the beast. Still got the Cat on it. Its got a good sound to it. Am doing the same to mine. Bit more expensive than the cat bypass pipe but everyone to there own.

Question

I noticed you said adding in the front. Not the rear. IS the front the same place in Lamont's pic?

The cat bypass pipe by itself will do three things, change the exhaust note, reduce heat and cause you to lose midrange power do to loss of back pressure. By installing the Big City Thunder baffle at the front of the bypass pipe you add the back pressure back into the system where it needs to be mid pipe. Adding this Wii change the exhaust to a deaper sound and eliminate the dcell piping caused by a lean exhaust.
