• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Can you

Very nice idea
Very nice indeed.
I'm wondering how reliable this is in the long term.
Have you found the seat material has held over time with all the flexing ?

I now have almost 11,000 miles on my bike and I use the gas door at every fill up
I do not even think about raising the seat
The seat looks the same and is just as strong as the day I modified it
Don

Thanks; I WILL do this, God willing! But I first have to finish two bathrooms if I want to be invited to my 48th wedding anniversary!

Gas door

don't know how to turn this picture upright

Don, you must have been the guy that motorcycledave was telling me about. That is an awesome idea buddy.:bowdown::chat:

I was just about to post

Hi Don
You beat me to the punch, I was just about to send your pictures to a fellow here wanting a gas door
he was going to put in a Jeep door or other but your idea is so much better.... and FREE...
I love FREE ..
Dave

tell me what has been modified on my 2014 stock seat

Hint
It is not the back rest
Don

thanx

for resurrecting this post...great idea and the way I'll do my RT...I kept looking at ideas with the hinged gas cap screwed to the seat, the auto closing screw on cap under that, etc. I'm feeling the warm fuzzies this mod brings...can't wait to get out the dremel and a new plastic cutting wheel

there's no hinge, per se
the vinyl cover and inside foam act as the hinge

the plastic back is "scored" and broken so that piece of the side of the seat can then swing open

I pulled just enough staples loose from the seat cover to pull the cover out of the way to cut the seat pan with my dremel tool
it was probably 5 or 6 staples each side of the cut at the top and 3 or 4 each side on the bottom...I then used contact cement to reattach the cover to the hard plastic back

I did not cut the foam or the cover as they are the hinge

I love the idea. Please keep us posted on how the leather wears after a few dozen fill-ups. In interested to see if a crease starts to form or if there is any stretching.
Thanks for the idea. (lol sorry just realized this was an older post, so does anyone have anything new to report?)

I was the first to do this
I can tell you after 15,000 miles it is still fine
There is a very fine line in the vinyl
You would have to know that it was hinged and look for it to see it

seat mod

Do you think this mod could be done without removing the seat? I just put the seat back on after sending off to Astech Seats and don't really want to take it off again.

Great idea!

It took me awhile to get up the nerve to cut the seat pan but when I started it was quite easy

I pulled just enough staples loose from the seat cover to pull the cover out of the way to cut the seat pan with my dermal tool
I did not cut the foam or the cover as they are the hinge
I used Velcro to hold it closed but I am thinking of using a magnetic latch
I believe it is invisible when closed as the pictures show
I like the way it works so that if I have things bungeed on my back seat I can fill up without taking everything off the seat
The 2014 seat does not have the oval insert as the earlier models did so this was what I can up with
I did not want a large metal gas door next to my leg
Don

The old saying " Necessity is the mother of invention" applies here. I like. Good job.
