Can Warped Rotors be turned/trued?

I know that brake drums can be machined to true them up, but is there any such thing for rotors? I'm starting to get a little warping on my front rotors and not wanting to pay nearly $300 for a new set.

No, they cannot be trued, there isn't enough material on them to turn them like car rotors. If the Spyder is still under warranty they should be replaced. Normal wear is not covered but warping is not normal.

Previous replies saying that you can't turn the Spyder rotors because there isn't enough material to work with are correct. But if you're getting both front rotors replaced for $300.00 that is pretty cheap. List is $226 each for the OEM rotors so closer to $500.00 not counting shipping.

The EBC rotors I carry are a high carbon compound. Not only do they stop better than the OEM rotors, but they also resist warpage better. EBC rotors use racing technology and can take more heat than stock rotors. The EBC Simi-Sintered pads coupled with their High Carbon rotors increases stopping power by 18% over the OEM components.

I sell the EBC rotors for $143.95 each including shipping. I keep these in stock so they can be shipped right away.

What is the normal mileage life for the original Equipment rotors?

If you treat them right the OEM rotors should outlast the Spyder. But there are several things that can greatly shorten the life of a rotor.

If they are not made correctly, if they are not torqued correctly, or if they are abused early in life before they are properly 'heat treated' a warp or 'Hard Spot' condition can be initiated. Once a rotor begins to warp or a Hot Spot is created it can not be fixed and will only get worse. Over time it will get so bad that the rotor will need to be replaced.

Thanks all for the feedback. At 22K mine are noticed only when you barely moving, lilke in slowing down. They've never been ridden hard and put away wet so I can't imagine why the warping is occuring. I'll have the shop check them out soon as I'm still under the 2 yr warranty till early June.

If I don't get any satisifaction under the warranty, I'll hold off till I need new front tires and do it then myself with Ron's products. I have his pads on the rear and they were an improvement over the OEM. IMO, this machine needs all the improvement it can get on the brakes; I've always felt them to be inadequate.

I've never attempted a panic stop but I've felt from the git go that the stock brakes were lacking some...

I wonder what 18% feels like?

What would the EBC Simi-Sintered pads bring to the table with stock rotors?

Took your sugestion and stopped by Winston-Salem Honda today and they took it right in, pulled front wheels, put some gadget on to check "run-out" and declared both to be warped. They called BRP and they're gonna warrant them.

Sent email to Bajaron for some new pads even tho OEM's were only about half worn at 23K. Tech did advise new pads with new rotors.

Thanks folks for good feedback.

Put EBC on back of my RT about 6 k ago work ok but getting thin again 15k. Ordered Ron's fronts EBC but they weren't that thin yet. Gonna make sure I put brake quiet on the back of the front pads and let it dry a few days before I replace them, hopefully that squeal will be gone though when I do. Prolly put the fronts on when my sway bar comes in this weekend.

EBC does not give any specs for pad only replacement. I went from Semi-Metallic (which is what the original Spyders came with) and I thought the Semi-Sintered were comparable. Semi-Metallic is generally the best stopping pads you can get without going to a full race compound (which is not recommended for street use).

That is very good news! Rotors and warranty can be a dicey issue. And your dealer is correct, you should always put new pads on new rotors. They will last and stop much better that way.

CRC Brake Quiet is a very good idea. But you don't need to let them sit for days before you install them. I think the instructions say something like 10 or 15 minutes. That is plenty of time.

It is important to put it on the BACK of the pad. I know of a few who have actually put Brake Quiet on the Friction Side of the pad! :yikes:

Is this something I need to pick up at auto store or does it come with the pads? Forgot to ask BR when I ordered.
