Can Am Spyders Resale value isn't great...

I have been monitoring the resale value of Spyders and Motorcycles in general on FB Market Place and Craigslist... I don’t think I’m gonna see too much of a “Rate of Return “ if I decide to sell it. But, after saying that, the fun factor has been worth it.

When I bought my RT Limited in July of 2023( new) I thought about resale value should I not like the 3 wheel experience and it doesn’t even cross my mind now. When the point in time comes that I can no longer ride safely due to age I will either sell it and get whatever I can or let one of my 3 sons take it on as all 3 ride 2 wheel motorcycles. The depreciation value does not come close to the freedom and experiences that I have had over the last 2&1/2 years of Spyder ownership!

I have been looking pretty hard for the last month or so. My last trip to NC, I really didn't enjoy. The handling issues I felt I had made me uncomfortable riding. So I'm looking to a R1200RT BMW. I don't want another big 800+ LB V Twin. But there are none for sale by dealers around here.

What were the handling issues on the Spyder? A long time friend of mine has a BMW 1200 and he purchased a Spyder RTL this past Sept as the weight of the BMW was getting too much, plus, he did not want to ride 2 up on the Beemer. He wanted to have his wife continue riding with him and the solution - a Spyder. He and she love it! In fact, they both took the Can Am riding course, and she now wants a ride of her own.

C hill C, how do think you would have fared out on a 2 wheeler?

Not as good, the first one was not a direct hit. I was squeezed into a curb, the right wheel locked up, and I was thrown over the handlebars and into a curb doing about 30. I had a bruise going from the back of my neck all the way down to my right knee for about 6 months and my right hip was still swollen almost a year later. The second one, I was rear ended while stopped at a light. Luckily, it was a Honda Civic and not anything bigger like an SUV or a truck. Also, my rear tire sort of acted like an airbag, taking most of the hit and then it blew out. The hood wedged itself between the rear fender and the tire, and then rolled it into my rear shock. It made my seat turn into a catapult and sent me over the handlebars and into the intersection. I was out for a little bit, and only came to when the paramedics arrived and started checking me out. I earned a trip to the hospital with that one, to get checked out with a cat scan. Besides the concussion, luckily, the only thing wrong was that I had the drivers backrest bracket compress through the seat and my pants, leaving a hole in each of them and a bruise on my ass for the next several months. If I had been on a 2 wheeler, I think they would have run straight over me.

We have 2 Spyders; one RT and an F3 for me and the wife. In all our discussions about getting them, not one single time did we mention re-sale value… What we discussed was trips and riding around with friends. The F3 is a new addition, we have been riding 30K Km’s since Aug 2024, 2 up…

There will come a day where we will have to sell them either for a replacement or for health issues. Hopefully, we have a lot more time to enjoy them beforehand; if not, that’s life, stuff happens, and we have to adapt. So go ride and enjoy life, you only have one and it goes by real fast.

You are correct. I don't really think too much about resale, but I do really search for a bargain when it comes to the purchase price. The biggest time I consider resale is when it comes to mods. I know that I will not hold onto many bikes for very long. I have been riding a relatively short 19 1/2 years and in that time, have been through 23 or 24 bikes. So when it comes to mods, I pay for those that will make a bike comfortable and fun to ride for me. I do not go for the flashy stuff because I know that mods will only get about 25-50% of their cost back, and everyone's taste is different when it comes to those items. I tend to think you might get 50% return on a mod if you can remove the part and sell it separately, but only 25% or less if you sell it on the bike. I actually sold my stock 2018 BMW K1600B for more than I paid for my current 2019 K1600B with over $6,000 worth of mods. It all comes down to selling at the right time, in the right place.

I agree about finding the best possible price when looking for a new ride. But like I said "resale" doesn't play into my decision. I've been riding for over 50 years (ya, and it has gone by quick). I tend to hold onto my bikes. I still have one I purchased in the early '80's . A 1976 KZ 900, but it needs a lot of work right now. It broke down in 2003 and has been sitting ever since (the year I bought my first V-Max, which is another story. I have owned 2). I also still have my '08 FJR, which was a retirement present I purchased for myself.

I have a few toys, and they will probably be sold as part of my estate, since I find it hard to part with them. The only reason that I don't have a half dozen bikes in my stable is because the wife would have a fit. I know they will be sold off one day, but just like my cars, trucks, and guns, I have thought about doing a list, and placing a price on each item. Otherwise someone will come up and offer an unreal offer on some of my toys and pick them up for a steal. My nephew (who was 11 months younger and like a brother to me) passed in 2020 and had an awesome Mustang with about 3700 miles on it. When his wife wanted to sell it, I had to explain to her about asking price and such. What she wasn't aware of is that in addition to it being a new car, it had about $15k worth of mods done to it and was putting out 850 hp instead of the 465 advertised. So if you have a lot invested in something that your spouse is not aware of, it is best to have a realistic number so they will know what to ask for those items.

Bought a 2018 RTL dark Asphalt Grey in Jan 2024 for 15,500
Sold the first one in Sept 2025 for 15,000
Bought a 2018 RTL Chrome Asphalt Grey in Nov 2025 for 15,000

I have a similar experience, but with purchasing new RTL's
2012 RTL purchased 7/2012 @ $26,499 - no trade-in
2014 RTL purchased (new) 3/2015 @ $24,715 - Trade-in 2012 @ $14,000 (20K miles - 2 yrs. old)
2022 RTL purchased (new) 4/2023 @ 26,497 - Trade-in 2014 @ $9,500 (60K miles - 8 yrs. old)
I didn't get much for the trade-ins but for new ones the price change isn't much seeing as the 2022 was $2 less than the 2012. 10 years little change, if you purchase a left-over.
I did a quick search and found new 2025 RTLs in the same ballpark as 2012 prices, from $24,997 to $26,499. Probably less in a few months,

Not sure about dealer sales, but dealer has a 2017 F3-L with about 5000 miles for sale for $19,999 CDN. We are in the rainy season, so not prime riding season.

I tend to buy a toy and keep it forever, so I'm not concerned about any resale or trade-in value. I bought my Spyder new in 2020. At the time a used F3 was only maybe $1500 less than the new one, but the new one had better features that I wanted, plus 3 yrs warranty. So it made sense (in my mind anyway) to buy the new one. We are getting interested in adding an RT Limited or Sea to Sky sometime in the next year or so, but I think I'm much more likely to find a used one at a price considerably less than what a new one is going for these days.

Actually, allowing for inflation, pricing has not changed all that much. I paid under $18k out the door for my 2024 F3S. Just $3k rise in 16 yrs.

I'm an Audiophile and my biggest fear is after my passing, my wife will sell off my system for what I told her I paid for it, instead of what it actually costs!

Well, I have to say it's on me and my style. I don't remember feeling this way last year, but it could be now that I have more time on it, I ride differently (less timid maybe) and I did not enjoy myself. I ride it back and forth to work often with no issues, just me in the mountains. LOL, I would miss reverse.
