Can-Am Roadster – Fuel Cap Replacement

A new Safety Bulletin (2012-13) was posted this morning for all 2008~2012 Spyder GS, RS & RT SM5 & SE5 models.

From BRP's Bulletin:

What is the potential problem?
The fuel cap may not seal properly the fuel tank filler neck. Fuel vapors in the presence of an ignition
source could result in a fire.

Which models are involved?
Can-Am Roadster model year 2008 to 2012.

What will BRP do?
For dealers: BRP is publishing a Safety Campaign bulletin giving the procedure to replace the fuel cap
with an improved version.
For customers: Starting in January and over the following 4 to 8 weeks, BRP will be sending to all
known registered owners a Safety Recall package that will include a letter and an improved fuel cap for
them to install. Please note that the shipping will be prioritized according to seasonality. A postage free
return card will also be included in the Safety Recall package for customers that no longer own the
vehicle or if the owner's information in the notice is incorrect.

Is there any way that you can confirm (or disprove) the possibility of using the fuel cap from the Can Am Comander as a replacement? We have heard that it is more robust and seals better.

I've heard that the Commander gas cap is better too but at this point, the recommendation from BRP is very clear and simple. You will need to install the new and improved fuel cap that will be mailed to you and discard any other caps you might have on your unit or kept in your garage.




The new fuel cap new will be easy to distinguish from the color of the seal and the size of the handle.






The solution from BRP in this safety recall is the only solution to consider. Dealers will be asked to change the caps on the unsold units for the same cap that will be shipped to customers.

My original gas cap failed after the first few weeks I owned the RT.

I was away on a trip to the Dragon at the time. I bought a replacement at Wal-Mart and I've been happy since.

And this is an example of why I love this site and visit daily. I went to the BRP site and it had no explanation / information that there was a packet being sent out. Just stated that you were to take the cap in this box and place it on the Spyder and discard the old one. I was looking all over the screen trying to find the box. Even if I had found it, I was not sure how I was going to reach in the monitor to pull it out. :banghead:
Why wouldn't they just put the same paragraph Shawn did here stating they were mailing them out, and the dates:sour:

I'm in Florida for the winter and have my mail forwarded via USPS temporary address change. All my first class mail is forwarded. I'm wondering if BRP will be sending both the notice and cap out via USPS first class mail?

So when is this recall active? I just spoke to my dealer (US) and they claim no knowledge of it. Unless I get a letter from BRP or the factory calls them to say there is a recall on the effected units, said dealer says it will be out of my own pocket. :cus:

or does that just mean go to the local dealer if any ?
