Can Am paint shows marks - any advice on removing them?

Yes, the paint or I bet the clear coat they use seems to scratch very easy. I had my 23 F3S since last year and found even using a microfiber towel will cause scratches.

Does BRP actually PUT a clear coat on these Spyders/Rykers?? :dontknow:

I have a feeling they don't; or at least, if they do, it's just one very light, very quick pass of the spray gun!! :cus:

It’s the shiny black part of our RT that shows the swirls. The actual red painted parts don’t seem to scratch as easy. Which brings me to wonder if it’s actually a paint at all or just glossy molded plastic.
It kinda reminds me of my Canam atv which is just a plastic with no paint. The upscale model has an actual painted surface. And mine has swirl marks that can literally come from moving your finger across the surface when its dusty.

Put me in the same boat as you all.... The piano black paint on my 2023 Manta Green is better than some but disappointing for band new bike. I'm wondering if its being damaged when they are uncrated and 'set up' or cleaned at the dealer for sale. I'm not 100% convinced it's BRP's quality. I say this because my piano black fenders (that sit lower) are in perfect condition. Why would they be in great shape and the higher panels that would get 'polished' more have issues? I also assume they are being painted in the same place... Right?

Once i get my bike back together, I'll want to take a look at the paint, maybe I should consider doing something while I have all the panels off now.....:dontknow:

Cheers.

I've been professionally painting yachts, boats, cars, motorcycles, and all sorts of collectibles like soda machines and old gas pumps, and I don't know what the deal is with their solid color paints. They ARE soft. My wild guess is, they use a base-coat clear-coat on the metallics which gives them a tougher substrate.
On the solid colors I'm guessing they are a single component product of a water based nature and are terribly soft.
Again, I'm guessing here but I do not believe the glossy black parts are painted, but are a gloss black mold injected plastic part.

I was at a local Costco recently and came across a new item there from Turtlewax called Mist. It was a three pack of various car care products for about $10. The included Mist minute wax worked remarkably well on covering those minor swirl marks on the black rear deck lid. The rest of the bike looked very good after a quick and easy application. I would look for the product near you at other stores like Target or Walmart.

I have had the same concerns since I rode my brand new 2022 F3-S Special Series 80 miles home from the dealership! The top of my gas tank has a weld like mark a couple inches long, marks in left side access panel that looks as if water ran across it, leaving a water spot like line that does not come off with detailing, and my right-side access panel has marks like fingerprints in the glossy black shine that also won't budge with detailing. A year later, it's all still there along, with scratches showing all over the glossy black areas! As said previously, some of this kind of sounds like unpainted injection moldings, with no attention to even basic cosmetics from the manufacturing.

Our 2021 F3 Limited has swirl marks all over the gloss panels. I thought, because of some other scratches on other parts, that the previous owner had cleaned or waxed it with something bad. I guess not!!! I covered the trunk lid with a wrap from Wrap my Spyder. Precut, came out pretty good. The lid under the windshield was also bad. I found a Spiderman decal that covered it on E-bay. I will try to post pictures. I cannot find the pictures. I believe the wrap we have is a "carbon fiber weave" one. There are a couple small wrinkles, but it is so much better. The Spiderman is just the mask/face. I had to cut out a small piece for the lid handle. Again, some wrinkles, but much better than the swirls.

Hi Everyone,

I don't believe the gloss 'piano black' panels are painted at all. I spent years working in the injection moulding industry moulding automotive parts & I'm pretty sure these are what they sometimes call 'MIC' or Moulded-In Colour'. Basically, the gloss finish you see on the panels is a product of an extremely highly polished mould surface and there is no post-mould treatments like painting. The polishing is usually a hand process requiring great skill, and it is a multi-step process after the cavity is machined using coarse through to fine abrasives and eventually to 1-3 micron diamond paste.

As you can imagine, maintaining such a surface finish on an injection mould in an industrial setting is quite a challenge, so some re-finishing is often needed along the way, but it never gets back to the original finish quality. Variables like the steel type, heat treatment, and even the very subtle abrasive effects of the decorative plastic being moulded can play a part in the longevity of a mirror-polished mould. The swirls you are seeing on your panels are probably caused by microscopic scratches in the mould cavity surface from either poor initial polishing or poor re-polishing.

Why is MIC done? Simply for cost & convenience. You still need an excellent surface finish on the mould cavity moulded part if you plan to paint it, so why not go that little bit further... make it really shiny & have the moulded part 100% finished straight from the moulding machine. Avoid all the expensive post-mould processes of having to buy paint, set up a paint line, labour costs, QA costs, etc.

Here's what we did on our '22. WrapMySpyder has covers for pretty much every surface. Ours has held up well in every type of weather both sitting in the sun for hours and in the garage. The shiny black surfaces were showing scratches from day one. This solved that issue and looks great!
