Can a mess be avoided?

I am going to do my first oil change on a 2014 RT. Can the dripping oil be avoided by removing the bottom plate or panel ahead of time? And is it hard to do? Is it worth it?

I did mine without spilling a drop. Just had to take it slow. I stuffed some absorbent shop towels in the channel per Shawn Smoak's oil change video and kept everything nice and neat.

Some folks here recommend removing the plate, but to me it's not worth it.

I just did mine

I did my oil two weeks ago and had no problem with dripping oil. I did stuff a few sacrificial paper towels in the opening before I removed the two torx bolts. Did the same as I removed the oil filter. Went real smooth and clean. Just took my time.

Place pet wee wee pads around oil filters to catch excess drips. You can also place one in the bottom tray.

I like to remove all the panels and clean the engine while I am there. The bottom panels do fill with road grime as does the areas around the filters (998). But then I have all the time in the world....hyea:

DRIPPING OIL

..NO.. On the RT with the 1330 engine there aren't any panels in the way....of the oil drain plugs. First get to the filter and un-screw the cap ( 36mm socket ) leave filter for last. Then you should have already raised the Spyder as high off the ground as possible....Use a Hex socket ( 6mm ? ) & Torx socket ( T45 ) use a ratchet extension. Put the socket in and tap hard with a hammer this will break the varnish hold it has and make it easier to remove...The key is.... after you have loosened it a little with the ratchet take the handle off so can spin it by hand....you should have a large enough tub underneath ( I use a square one ,it's easier to pour the old oil into containers this way) to catch the oil...and newspapers all over the place....push in while turning, when you see oil on the threads you want to pullout quickly....this should keep you mostly clean....it does me....now do the other plug the same way....then after 10 minutes or so do the oil filter have paper towels ready when you remove it will drip a little.......Mike :bbq:
