CALL FROM DISCOUNT TIRE... Ref KUMHO ECSTA AST

A contract can!
 What kind of contract?
First; what contract would possibly exist betweem BRP, and Discount Tire, that would not allow them to sell a Kumho tire... so that BRP can sell a Kenda??
That just makes no sense at all... :dontknow:

Now; if NHTSA stepped in; saying that you can't sell an automotive tire to a person who's going to put it on a motorcycle... I'd almost beleive that! :gaah:

porsche has this warning in reference to choosing tires for their cars:
Inflations vary according to load. Always refer to vehicle placard and owner's manual. WARNING: Only tires of identical type, make, speed index and specification code (N0, N1, N2...) can be used on the same vehicle.

perhaps can am feels this way too. yes we have put non porsche tires on but they have to meet specs

BRP can't tell Discount Tire what to sell unless they own Discount Tire. Even if they own Kumho, they can't tell Discount Tire who to sell it to, but they could stop providing Kumho to Discount Tire. Any other action would be restraint of trade.

A Spyder-owner at 'Quest (it's his story, so I won't say who it is) told me his dealer told him if he puts anything buy OEM tires on, he'll void the warranty!! I told him he should find a new dealer.

UPDATE...

Just re-ordered the tire and said it was for an 08 Cobalt!

... And received this email. I think they're trying to put people off as they can't get them.
Told me they're on back order for 90 days, could be longer.
Well, as I don't need it right now, told them to leave the order in place and I'll wait... He seemed a little surprised!

It sounds to me like Discount Tire either just lost a lawsuit or looks like they are about to lose one. One big thing about tires, how are you going use them. If you drive your corvette at less then 35 MPH, 1500 miles ayear and never in the rain, almost any tire will do. If you are going to drive the Autobanh, you better have great tires. ( I was over there and almost unlimited speed. Hear it is different now)In fact the German government seized all the Corvettes and required new/better tires before they could sell them in Germany. then the big Ford/Goodyear ( I think Goodyear) tire mess. Who was at fault for all the Explorer roll overs.

Newest Tire Dealer

I say start a new tire dealership. Spyderlovers Tire has a cool ring to it. We buy a couple dozen Khumos nd Michelins in the appropriate sizes and make then available here for the cost of shipping and handling. No more hastles. Who's volunteering?:yikes:

Have you called SpyderPops or Pitbull?

You can get the Arachnid tire (Vee Rubber) from a certain "comfortable" vendor but they're no longer site supporters... around $131 plus shipping.
Not that bad for a motorcycle tire, but after seeing the $81 price point, that's what we are chasing!

$81 + free shipping!!

Just ordered one from discount tire here in SoCal for my "Toyota Tacoma" (Thanks Mikeguyver!) Paid with paypal and now we shall see if'n I actually get it.

So, I ordered the tire from Discounttiredirect.com and I just received a call from them...

The person on the phone tells me he can't sell me the tire as Can Am have told them specifically NOT to sell the tire as they believe it's not strong enough on the walls when taking corners!!

Anyone else heard of this?

I've read lots of posts where members are considering this tire and haven't heard anything about the walls of this tire not being up to scratch for the Spyder!

Apparently Can Am have told Discounttiredirect.com that the only tire that will work on the Spyder is the one they sell on their website and if they sell the tire, they'll be liable.

B.S??

That is a crock. Liability ends after the sale. I could be buying a tire as a swing in my front yard...now they won't sell it because I might put it on a Spyder???
Next time...don't mention that you're putting it on a Spyder . That's a sure-fire way to be sent packing. If asked, you are mounting it on your '92 Toyota MR2.

BTW...I'm on my 2nd Kumho Ecsta AST and have had no problems whatsoever. In fact, i'd recommend it to others.

UhOh!

Just got this in email:yikes: Any suggestions?

tires

brp can't stop a tire company from selling tires regardless. They can suggest, recommend but thats it. If any of us put non recommended tires on and have a problem we will be the only ones responsible.

I agree. Tires aren't a covered warranty item due to "normal wear and tear" so why would BRP care? Oh wait! The easiest alternative option would be to "just put on Can-Am tires". So they may be slightly biased (ya think?) I have had a Kumho tire on my back tire for 8000 miles and no issues and if I do, I am financially responsible, not Can-Am. Also the Kumho tire is 4 ply, the Can-Am tire is 3 ply. I purchased from DiscountTireDirect.com ($81 vs Can-Am $139) and had it shipped (free) to my Spyder dealer for install. Funny, the parts person there didn't want me to put the tire on (again I didn't purchase it FROM THEM) but the Service guys said they do it all the time with no problems.

This issue is inspired by companies that don't want Kumho stealing their tire business, particularly BRP. I will say that I got 20k out of my BRPOEM tire and will be comparing the life of my Kumho to that, but I can't see how 4 ply will be worse than 3-ply.

It's starting to look like buying 1 tire at a time triggers red flags.

Maybe a small group buy where someone buys 4 tires at a time for their TACOMA and start divvying it up with other members.
But than again....Discount Tire and others are probably reading this thread already. :sour:

 Don't give them any ideas! :yikes:

Just tell them that you had a front tire take a hit from some debris on the road, so you only need one...

ordered and received

I ordered the Kumho from Discount Tire (local) via phone on the 12th of this month. Hubby picked it up today. So that said..obviously they are not out of stock. Now I did not tell them it was for a Spyder, I did give them a bogus vehicle and said it was going to be a spare. We did try to order one from Dicount Tire Direct and received a phone call saying the tire was on 90 day backorder.

I ordered a Michelin from Amazon, no hassle, no questions, I should be here early next week. Sorry Discount you lost a customer.
