• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

California Scientific Windshield

Daryl, I received all the pictures you sent and thanks much for them.

The windshield does look larger but hopefully it will make for a much nicer ride sitting behind it. Also hope the passenger can feel the difference.

More later when I get mine installed.

New shield on the way

Ordered shield today after talking to mark, I should have report on it after I get back from lamonts BBQ

First ride impressions

i took The Buggy:spyder2: out for a ride today with the calsci shield. Jumped on the 4 lane and the first thing I noticed was that the buffeting side to side action was gone. I was concerned about the hole in the shield but the wind through the hole is channeled up by the dash and does not affect the rider. It remains to be seen what rain does:dontknow:

I ordered the XL shield since I am 6'1" and have a long upper body:yes:. At full down I can see over the shield easily (if you are much shorter, I would consider one of the "less tall" sizes. At full up it sends the airstream about 8 inches over my head (measured by holding up my hand at 70 mph).

Mrs Chief hasn't tried it yet but we are going on a long ride through IL, WI and IA Saturday so I should be able to pass on her thoughts afterwards.

So far it looks like a good investment. Make sure you print the instructions from the website since none were included with the shipment. Took me a while to figure out that I had to remove the metal bushings from the rubber grommets before trying to get the grommets out of the mounting holes in the old windshield. Was about to get the axe out of the truck....:yikes:

Good to read your honest evaluation. Wife said our new shield arrived last night. Can't wait to install it and see what she thinks about it.

I installed the windshield last night. I ordered the medium, so it's almost a full 7" shorter than my 2010 windshield and 1/2" or so wider at the bottom, but it doesn't taper in at the top like the stock one, so it remains fairly wide. No surprise there, as this is how it's pictured on the site. The windsheild is almost half the weight of the stock as well and definitely made of a different material. The edges look white, instead of black, but not a huge issue, just an observation.

As mentioned in the previous review, the turbulance at highway speeds is almost zero. I had to raise my windshield only an inch at 70mph for the wind to go almost silent with nothing at all pounding on my helmet, and absolutely no windshield in my view. Definitely a huge improvement. It seems it would provide pretty good protection in the colder temps as well, as the air that circulates feels more like a light breeze.:thumbup:

I would be curious to see how it compares with the foks who installed the GW vents in their shields. I was about to do that, but the thought of spending that much time in the hot phoenix garage, cutting mine to my size and installing the vent was repulsive, :yikes:so I took the easy route!

MidLife, one more Q. When the shield is at it's lowest position, does the wind go over your helmet? Or does the wind hit your face shield or the top of your helmet?. Thx again (OK a few Q)

At the lowest point, the wind barely hits the top of my helmet.

MidLife,
Thanks for this info! since I'm also 5'10" "ish", you 've made shopping easier... ;)
Now all I need is some reports from the Co-Pilot's pillion to find out about the air back there...

Okay, after a short rest this afternoon I installed my new XL California Scientific windshield. I then went for a 'Quick' test ride by myself and could tell a big difference. Then when my wife got home I took her out for the ultimate test. On our Spyder and our Harley she has the final say as to what mods stay and which ones go.

I'm 6' 1" with a 32" inseam and Julie is 5' 6" tall. The OEM windshield is just okay but left much to be desired as far as buffeting and being quiet. My wife is used to riding in quiet comfort on the back of our Harley which has an 11" Long Rider Shield Ultra Curve windshield.

I started with the windshield completely lowered and she said there was not a lot of difference in the new one and the OEM one. I then started raising it a little at a time and when it was up about an inch or two she noticed a big difference. Much quieter and the buffeting was pretty much gone. When it was fully up she thought it was as quiet or maybe a lot quieter than the Harley. We took it out on the freeway and rode about 60 miles. At highway speeds we were able to hear the radio without having to crank it up where you are hearing mostly incomprehensible noise. Not the best audio but manageable without a lot of serious work.

So I am pleased with my purchase and I know my wife is also very pleased. And that my friends is the best approval man can get. ;)

I have also ordered another one that is a large as I think the XL is just a little bit too tall for me. So I may have a XL one for sale hear soon.

Carl, I read on their website, that they would trade you, if the size is incorrect. Not trying to take a deal away from anyone, but it does seem they would take the guess work out of the purchase, bu offering such a guarantee.

MLC, actually as soon as I placed my order for another one the owner called me and asked if there was a problem. When I explained to him what I was doing he was okay.

I was so impressed by his courtesy and his business ethics and that he would call that I was almost speechless. Great man to deal with.

I think I need one of these - probably a small. I'm 5'5 and at its lowest point, my stock windshield divides my vision line. Feels like I'm looking through bifocals.

if youre selling your XL please let me know

I am going to order one but will wait and take yours off your hands if you are going to sell it
