There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. California DMV sucks

So California's DMV sucks... :dontknow:
Please tell me about one, that doesn't! :roflblack:

Here in East Tennessee I can walk in just about any time the DMV is open (with the exception of around lunch time the last day of the month. And I may have to wait 5 minutes to get to one of the 3 windows. But usually I walk right up to an open window.

The DMV I went to in California had 52 windows. And if you did not have an appointment you could count on a 1-2 hour wait.

not a MC in Ca

I'm visiting Ca from Tx and have used the HOV lane, am I breaking the law? Why is the Spyder not a motorcycle? Are Honda or Harley three wheeler not motorcycles?

Give a call to the Highway Patrol and ask an officer for an opinion. They would be the ones to pull you over if they felt you were illegal.

That Moose riding Border Patrol is only found in Canada Bob! :lecturef_smilie:

In New Zealand their Border Patrol rides Kiwi's (small flightless birds that lay bloody ginormous eggs - you really don't wanta argue with anything that can survive pooping out such a bloody large thing! ) & here in Orstrailya the Border Patrol either rides Drop Bears (savagely carniverous Cousins of Koala's that really don't like any bloody Furriners as well as people who don't eat vegemite & so drop on them outta the trees at every opportunity) or 'bare-foot water ski-ing Kangaroos' - their big feet make them vastly more maneuverable at speed so that's how we Patrol the vast coastline we've got here!

The sales tax is a one time charge when you purchase the vehicle! That would be collected when you purchase the item. You will not pay it again. You will pay personal property tax each year, but it is included in the annual fee you pay for registration to DMV ( that portion of the fee is deductible). That is included in the $222.00 fee you are paying on this invoice. When you receive your renewal notice from DMV it will be itemized. If you are paying that $643 every year, then Alice is getting rich on you!:roflblack::roflblack:

Not sure what exactly your saying.

previous owner payed sales tax when she bought the Spyder. i paid $643 in sales tax based on the vehicles sold price. Is that not double dipping on sales tax? Guess I am not smart enough to understand it. No big. It is done.

No Alice fee is $60 and a one time thing for each vehicle of course.

THAT'S what I was saying but some got confused that we are saying WE pay sales tax each year on the vehicle.

However many times a vehicle is sold through the years, the state of NJ collects 7.5% of it's "fair market value" each time it's sold. (You can't claim to have paid only $1000 for that Spyder. It may take a year or two, but the taxman will send you a revised bill for what they say is it's FMV)

Sales tax is collected once per sales transaction. You will pay sales tax one time when you buy it. If you sell it, then the new buyer will pay sales tax one time, so on and so forth, for each separate transaction. No double dipping involved.

Hi Boiler,

Re: Sales tax is collected once per sales transaction.

Oregon does not have a sales tax. However, this is how I understand it is in Washington state; just across the river.

Just a curiousity, if you buy a vehicle when you are single, then get married & add the new wife onto the title; is there a sales tax for that change in ownership?

And I know that each state may be different,

Not in Illinois.......yet! I had to pay $25 sales tax for my Spyder because I bought it out of state. If a state charged sales tax, again, because of the addition of a spouse on the title, I would be talking to a lawyer and starting a protest!

That WOULD be double dipping!

Why would you need to add her to the title?

I believe that in NJ, if one were to sell a vehicle to a close family member they would waive the sales tax collection. As in everything else we discuss, each state varies in their rules. YMMV.

My registration

You paid sales tax only one time. You also paid a "registration" fee but that is not part of the sales tax. We have the same thing here in AZ but the difference is in the fee itself. Yours was $222 and ours is $8. Sales tax amount varies by location (county) and whether or not you are buying from a dealer (you pay sales tax) or a private party (no sales tax).
