Wasn't it Catalan, the 'local language' of Catalonia, North Eastern modern Spain, where many still speak Catalan (which is a language descended from low Latin & sorta crossed with Spanish, French, & Italian - & probably closer to the last 2 than Spanish) & some frequently lobby for independence from the rest of Spain??
It's sorta like the Basques, or if you like, it could even be considered similar to the USA & the Native Americans.... Both the Catalan People & the Basques are descendants of those who have always lived in their particular areas of what the World generally recognises as Spain; but they have a distinct culture, langauge, and they even look ethnically different!
Don't whatever you do call a Catalan or a Basque person 'Spanish' - not unless you really don't value your life!! :lecturef_smilie:
