BRP hard bags

Had the BRP hard bags put on Friday. Can't seem to get to the Battery now with the rear signals moved. Is there an easy way to get to the battery?

Also I did not make it home, 30 miles, before the red plastic lens fell off one of the bags. The other side lens fell off the minute I touched it. Not to happy about it!!

Did the dealer sell you the color matching panels? If they didn't the reflectors will fall out. The price of the panels is an additional $89.00 Like the rear seat rest there are two things to buy for the complete kit. The dealer should have given you a tool to take off the brackets so you can access the side panels.

Sorry about your troubles.... whoever did the install messed up and didn't do it right! Those panels shouldn't just 'fall off'.

As far as battery access---- nope--- makes it a pain in the butt. You'll have to remove the left-side turn signal in order to remove the rear left panel to access the battery.

No on the color matching panels. Did not know I needed them, dealer didn't mention that I needed them. Will have to talk to them on Monday!!

That stinks having to take the signal off!! Will have to figure out what I'm going to do. I want to be able to get to the battery in a reasonable amount of time. With me pulling the signal it will take me half a day. May have to just keep only the one bag on the right side on, That will look different.

Thanks for both of your responses.

Fire,

I am getting my bags in a few months...are you saying that if you remove the bag and the quick release bracket that you still can't get to the battery easily? What am I missing here?

Also, I'm getting the matching yellow panels...what tool do I have to make sure I get for this?

I'm excited to get them but are we again dealing with a BRP headache? Can't they make anything easy?

Let me see if I have my photos of my install that show the area. You should be able to get to the battery in about 1/2 hour with the right tools--- which is just 2 open-end wrenches or small sockets--- 13 mm I believe.

What you would do is remove the bag and the quick-release rack on the left side--- 60 seconds-- easy to do. Then you would remove the rear splash panel--- or at least enough so you can get your hands up near where the new turn signal post goes. Then you loosen 2 bolts -unplug the turn signal and remove it. Remove the left panel and then you have access.

It would be a pretty rare situation that one would have to do this as there are also connectors right under the seat that you can access.

As far as the color panels--- if installed correctly they won't come out without unscrewing from the inside of of the case.

Do you have cables hooked up that you can get to to hook up a battery charger? I was just pulling the panel to hook right to the battery terminals to charge it once a month over the winter.

There are jumper/charging terminals right under the seat. It is not a problem to use those as long as your main terminals are clean and tight. You only need to access the battery for periodic maintenance (cleaning and tightening terminals) or for battery replacement every handful of years. To make charging even easier, next time you access the battery, install a charging pigtail, as usually provided with a charger. I'm not sure why the hubbub, I only access my battery once or twice a year, after the initial mods...especially with an auxiliary fusebox.

Fear of the unknown! :yikes:

I have the 'pigtails' connected for the battery tender so when I have the bags put on, I'll make sure they're tight and the terminals clean...I just didn't realize they had to move a bunch of things around to make the bags work!

I found the same thing out when I installed mine:yikes: just how many things you have to move to get to the battery. I agree can't BRP make anything easier for us spyder riders?

You only move the turn signals to the end of the added stalks/mounts to make the bags work. Unfortunately, the new stalk penetrates the rear panel, so it can't be readily removed. You must then remove the undertail panel to access the bracket bolts, remove the stalk, then remove the panel. You already had to disconnect the turn signal wiring to remove this panel. This ritual only happens when you actually want to get to the battery, though. It just adds some time to the process.

I guess simple minds like mine like simple processes. I guess I will remove the bags and buy the girlfriend a big backpack. Oh no that means the backrest has to come off also.

Actually I think I will remove the turn signals, nobody else seems to use theirs especially on cars.

I would recommend removing the turn signals and adding a Triple-Play unit from ESI - that way your rear brake lights also work as blinkers....

AND --- I would add the ESI LED Saddle bag lights--- then you're covered and access to the battery is just like it was before except you have to pop the bag and the quick-release rack off----60 seconds of added work.

That's what I would do if access to the battery was warranted more than 1-2 times a year--- although I just can't imagine that.

Both are great ideas and I think I will add ESI Triple Play at the least.

Thanks

Afraid that won't help. The offending bracket is one of the saddlebag mounts, as well as the turn signal mount. It will still be in the way as long as you have the bags. The only real answer for luggage space plus access is a Givi SR770 tailrack and a topcase, a kewlmetal rack and topcase mount, or adding a topcase to the BRP sport rack.

Oooops...! duh....

Wasn't thinking about that. I suppose a person *could* cut the arm off the stalk-- but they would probably have to increase the size of the hole.

Or maybe just cut a slot from the bottom up to the stalk so the panel can slip over it.....

Guess I will pull it apart and take a look to see if I can come up with a way to change the bar so the panel will slide off it. Only other choice is to cut a hole in the panel big enough to get the battery out and put a door on it!!

I will probably just leave it as is and pull it apart when I want to get to the battery. maybe the end of the week.

Got to see if I can get the lens for the left bag and then glue both on as I don't want the color panels that hold them on.

Thanks guys

Again, why can't they just make it easy? argh!

Oh--- you didn't have the colored panels installed? That would explain the lens falling off. They should have explained that the colored panels are not 'optional' --- you have to have them to finish the bag off and hold the lens in place. I thought your colored panel came off.

Looking at the turn signal post, I think you could easily just cut a notch about 1.5" wide and all the way down to the bottom of the panel where it meets the undersplash... which is only about 1" - 2". That would probably make it so you could remove the panel---
