Broken Rear Fender is NOT covered by BEST protection plan

Erags

Got a call today letting us know that our 2008 GS rear fender is not covered under the BEST protection. The Spyder is still covered, but not the rear fender. On the web page for BEST Protection in small print:

"Note: accessories, normal wear and maintenance items such as tires, batteries, bulbs, filters and lubricants are not covered,"but it doesn't say anything about body parts.

So it looks like the rear fender is an accessory (because it doesn't fit in with items like tires, batteries, bulbs, filters and lubricants), or is it that they consider the fender falling apart "normal wear?"

We are going to have to think about this for awhile. I'm not sure if I need that accessory because the 2 rear fender supports are $50.00 each plus I will need all new bolts and nuts, because of the normal wear and tear on them from the rear tire throwing things up against them.

I'm making this piece of Diamond Plate aluminum for mounting the license plate and license plate light.

Has anyone else had similar experience with the BEST warranty for this problem? I've seen other posts about the rear fender brackets breaking, so it's obviously something that happens fairly often.

Well IMHO Thats a load of crap. The fender braces were inadequate from the get go as others have broken fender braces too. If the braces were better made they would not break.

I'm not sure about anyone getting it covered directly under their BEST warranty - but I know BRP has covered them under the factory warranty.
I'm also not sure anyone has had BRP cover them once they were out of the 2 year factory warranty period....

Seems BEST is considering it something like body rust or a dented car panel for example--- which I don't think is fair.

I never got mine fixed and prefer to run without the fender --- but either BRP or BEST should cover this in my opinion as this has been a pretty common problem.

Well, you know of one now! I got my fender brackets replaced 2 months ago on my 08 GS under the B.E.S.T. warranty. The factory warranty expired last summer, so I would think it was B.E.S.T covering it. My fender brackets were ripped just like Erags', maybe even worse.

I wasn't even charged the $50 deductible.

Hmm...I wonder if that was just my dealer being really nice to me. :dontknow:

I will gladly trade you my fender braces that I took off, for your toy hauler !!! Just think, $100.00 for those braces is only 50 miles worth of gas in your Toy Hauler. :roflblack: Ed, say hello to DocRags from us.

getting new rear fender

Got a call this morning and was told that BRP was going to replace my rear fender. Was also told that it isn't covered under the extend warranty, but BRP was still going to take care if it. So I'm a happy Camper tonight, hope everyone else had a good day too.

I also agree. My first was replaced under warranty. They actually had to replace not only the rear fender braces and bracket, but the swing arm as well. That was at 17k miles. Then at 35k I had the same problem with my second set, but it wasn't under warranty anymore.... so I took the damn things off.

I actually just got done pulling another set of bad braces off my neighbor's '08 GS that has 17k miles.

I'd accept the parts, wrap them up and store them, in case you want to sell your Spyder later. That's what I did with mine. It's such a flimsy design that I don't want it on my ryde. I hung my tag from the topcase mount similarly to the way you did, Erag, but I use a length of flatbar, rather than the diamond plate, as I did not want to obscure the brake lights.

After corresponding with Carlo, BRP has agreed to replace both mine and my husband's as a goodwill measure. IMHO no way is this fair wear and tear. Kudos to Carlo.

Yes they refused to cover mine under "Best". I guess it's not really the best is it? They broke once under the normal 2 year, and were replaced free. IMO they are a bad design and should not only be replaced but replaced with a better design.

I eliminated the fender, and used a license plate relocater kit I bought on ebay. That just broke also. I am waiting for a response from the dealer, accufast2d to see if they back up their product better than BRP does.

FENDER BRACKET ISSUES

For all those who are unable to get this problem fixed for free under some of warranty or good will or whatever.. Easy inexpensive fix. Sand what's left spray with RUSTEOLEUM RUST FIGHTER follow drying directions.... Spray or better yet brush paint with good oil based paint....Get a couple of small pieces of 18 guage (or similar) galvanized sheet metal (I find it thrown out all the time i.e. air ducts ) cut to size POP RIVET in place (remember you will not be able to see this when finished) Paint again and replace fender .....You may never have to revisit this issue again.... I hope you get it done for free it's the right thing to do BRP. mike

This is nice to hear.
Now if they would just fix the problem of the license plate reflector vibrating loose and falling off on the 08 models. All held on by one very small screw. $50 replacement part, not counting the cost of having it put on.

I lost my license plate light cover two weeks ago, and still waiting to see if it will be covered by warranty. Mine is a 2010 bought on 1/15/11 with 4300 miles on it at the time. Good news is the small screw it still there.

Here's my solution to the fender problem, the reflector problem and the plate illumination problem.Brakelight off 1.jpgBrakelight-on-1.jpg
The first photo shows brakes off and the second shows brakes on. I hung the plate from the topcase bracket using flatbar covered with rubber hose to contain the wiring. Tag illumination is by Custom Dynamics Dual Color Tag Bolts (red/white). Brake lights are provided buy the stock brakelights, which remain visible, and also by the Red Knight Riderz LED Lightbar, also from CD. Connection by Positaps. BTW, I have tested this set-up and it does not throw a roostertail or get my passenger wet, either.

I contacted accufast2d on ebay about the broken bracket. They seem to be very willing to back up thier product. They are sending me a replacement and making it double the thickness. I will let you all know how that works out in case you decide to go fenderless.

Good to see that BRP is backing up what appears to be a design flaw on the fender brackets.

Apparantly BRP is watching the forum--and that is good.

Another thing I have been noting--there appears to be a difference of opinion between dealers concerning their willingness to repair items under warranty. In my opinion, it is also a customer satisfaction issue, and sometimes you run into cheapskate dealers that are willing to let a customer get ticked off and walk, over a $50.00 item. These are the dealers that I am guessing wont be around a year or two from now.
