Well, it never fails - while mounting a GIVI plate to Bone Crushers BRP sport rack plate - I broke off one of the tabs that holds the latch pin in place. The metal that these are made of is CHEAP and breaks EASY.
This is something I thought would happen to MY plate eventually as the end 'caps' on the latch pin have come off before.
I just wish it had not happened while working on someone else's plate!
So I decided to come up with a fix - and then broke my plate tabs off in order to use mine as a guinea pig before working on his plate.
Here is the solution I came up with. The photos should explain it pretty well.
I bought a 2" U-bolt, 5/16 thread.
Had to modify it a bit to make it work:
Extended the threads another 1/2" towards the "U". Probably only needed 3/8".
Shaved a bit off the sides as it was rubbing a bit on the rack when latching it on.
Trimmed the length of the bolt ends so they would fit under the GIVI rack mount plate.
Drilled 2 holes in rack plate for mounting.
Used washers on the top, no room for them on bottom.
Used nylon-lock nuts on both top and bottom.
Had to cut 2 small shims to level out where the nuts press on the underside of BRP plate (arrows in pics) in order to have it mount level.
Anyhow, while it might not be the prettiest fix in the world, all the uglyness is hidden by the GIVI plate and it works like a charm.
No more worries about those end caps coming off the latch pin or the tabs breaking off --
Certainly could be done without the GIVI plate, but you would have 2 nuts showing on top of your BRP plate.
A similar fix could probably work if you broke the latch pin on the BRP backrest.
