Break in?

Break in servicing? As I get close to the 500 mile mark, I am wondering what sort of break in period or break in service I might need to perform.

Your profile indicates you have an F3. The 1330 engine does not require any "break-in" service (oil/filter, checkover) until 3,000 miles. Then at 9,300 mile intervals--OR--once a year--whichever comes first.

The 600 mile break in service was for the 998 twins.

Easy on the brakes for about 300 miles. Vary the speeds rather than stay on a particular speed for extended periods of time.

Thanks for the info. I am at about 460 miles now. I've done both in-town and highway driving so the speed has varied quite a bit so far. I'll make sure to get it in at 3500 miles.

Dealers are famous for pushing the 500/600 mile service. The manuals says

Operating During Break-InA break-in period of 1 000 km (600 mi)is required for the vehicle.During the first 300 km (200 mi), avoid hard braking.WARNING New brakes and tires do not operate at their maximum efficiency until their break-in is completed.Braking, steering and VSS performance may be reduced, so use extra caution.Brakes and tires take about 300 km(200 mi) of riding with frequent braking and steering to break-in.For riding with infrequent braking and steering, allow extra time to break-in the brakes and tires.During the first 1 000 km (600 mi):– Avoid full throttle acceleration.– Avoid maintaining constant RPM.– If the cooling fan operates continuously during stop and go traffic, pullover and shut off the engine to let it cool off or speed up to let air cool off the engine.After the break-in period, your vehicle should be inspected as per the MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE.


Note after the break-in period "your vehicle should be inspected as per the MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE." which is 3500 miles.

I'll make sure to get it in at 3500 miles.

And try to read the owners manual too.
Lots of good information in there.......like how to check the oil level......which is not as simple as you might think.

Here's the first inspection schedule and tasks from page 109 of your operator's guide.

+1 for Easy Rider's recommendation. Reading the manual will make you a much more knowledgeable Spyder owner.

If you do the math, second oil change is roughly (3.5k + 31,9.3k) 12,800 miles. Thereafter 22,100 | 31,400 | 40,700

Yup! If you want to get technical about it. I did this without looking in the manual. Close enough for horseshoes. At least we cleared up the 500/600 mile that is used a lot by dealers for 1330's in error.

Currently, mine gets "once a year" since I have not exceeded 9,000 + in a year for a while now. First appointment within a couple weeks of riding season each year. Mileage don't matter in my case.

not exactly on point to the Op--but for the most novice, inept, utterly lacking mechanical inclination, but a f3 1330 owner/lover--what are some super easy items that one can look at , tighten, check, observe, on the trike that you more expert folks can advise...??if theres prior throrough postings on this issue, much appreciate being directed to same...

I’m just under 900 miles. I like to vary the speed, rpm. If on a lengthy ride, stop to give her a rest (apologies to anyone if I offend by using the feminine for my ride). Other than that, follow what everyone else has offered in way of info.

I just got my F3T back in late October and was told to do the 500 mile oil change. Thanks everyone for the info. Really does help coming to this forum and looking around at different posts and all the answers posted.

No. Unless you want to give the dealer $300 or so to do a not required service.
