• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Break In Period

I just got my Spyder RT-S SE5 in Orbital Blue and luv it. How am I supposed to break it in? I was told to just speed up and slow down when I am riding. Speed up and slow down to what speeds? How often do I do this? Every 5 minutes? 10 minutes? I have asked several people and my salesman and all I get is speed up and slow down. Can anyone be a little more specific? I feel like a schmuck but oh well. LOL

Thanks,

Tony

You are going to get a lot of different views on this so I will start.

I varied my speed for the first 200 miles, avoiding real hard acceleration and constant speeds. I ran it up to 65 on the highway, held it for a few miles, then headed thru neighborhoods where the limit was less. I also did the old fashioned heat cycle approach. Run her till she gets up to normal operating speed, then find a place in the shade to let her cool back down. Did 4 of these the first day. This is from my old racing days when we didnt have dyno's to break motors in on and did it on the stands. Rotax motors dont really require the standard break-in period like older motors did. The Renegade quads are pretty much uncrate it and hammer it.

Also, double check your oil level to make sure the dealer did the proper setup for you. I have personally seen 3 Spyders that were low on oil from the start.

Lastly, welcome and :congrats:

I do not have a copy of the RT owners manual, but I guarantee you that there is a section on break-in in the early part of the manual -- just like there is for the 2008-2009 models.

The 2009 manual (p26) says:
A break-in period of 1000 km(625mi) is
required for the vehicle.
During the first 300 km(186 mi), avoid
hard braking.
During the first 1000 km(625 mi):
– Avoid full throttle acceleration.
BASIC PROCEDURES
– Avoid prolonged riding.
– If the cooling fan operates continuously
during stop and go traffic, pull
over and shut off the engine to let it
cool off or speed up to let air cool off
the engine.
After the break-in period, your vehicle
should be inspected by an authorized
Can-Am roadster dealer as per the
MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE (p.84).
NOTE: The break-in inspection is performed
at the expense of the vehicle
owner.

We are supposed to break it in ?? :yikes:

Crap :trike:

But it already is broken

Sorry I couldn't resist. Mine is fixed now and running well, but it seems many others are "broken" in one form or another.

Good advice you have been given. I found the break in section in the owners manual. But a standard I have been told for any new motorcycle is

not over 55 for first 100 miles
no hard acceleration or braking for 300 miles

lol read owners manual :2thumbs::roflblack::spyder:

You should treat the Spyder rough, open her up in high RPM...IMHO

He also recommends a turbo booster. Ask him and just like the commercial, he'll tell you, "Trust me, I'm a doctor"! I don't think he's a very good basketball player though! IMHO :roflblack:

"during first 200 miles avoid hard braking"

during the first 600 miles,

Avoid full throtle acceleration.

Avoid prolonged riding.

"If the cooling fan operates continuously during stop and
go traffic, pull over and shut off the engine to let it cool off
or speed up to let air cool off the engine."

also read the warning at top of page 45.
