Brand new '13 RT purchased in April, '15! he header

New member! I have been observing here for a while. I purchased 2013 RTS in April of this year from a dealer and it had 0 miles on it. I got a great deal on it, being aware of the coming recall fix. Well, I got the recall work done in July. There IS improvement! BUT still noticing some fuel vapor. Not as bad as before, and not at every stop. Heat is reduced. Love the scoops. My question is. Has everyone here that got the recall work done have the cat removed, wrap the headers, apply heat shields, etc? I truly believe the cat is the issue. Thinking of the ceramic coated bypass pipe and wrapping the headers and adding a fan on the other side. I do not think it is completely fixed. I am going on a trip soon. When I get back, I may go back to the dealer and raise some questions.

If you are going to coat the bypass pipe, go the next step and remove the entire exhaust and have it all coated. Assuming you will probably use Jet Hot to coat the pipe. Looks good, works well.

I was just going to purchase the bypass pipe that is already coated. I can't recall who it was from off hand. I have it written down somewhere. I would really love some feed back from folks who still have a cat. If anyone still does. Does the engine run a bit leaner after the cat has been removed? Love this forum!! So much great info! Thanks in advance!!

I actually just saw yesterday after riding all day in 95 degree weather the fuel vapors coming from the vent tube underneath the bike. A little concerned.....

I had originally removed the cat and wrapped the headers and bypass pipe BEFORE having the recall done. BOTH of these changes made a difference in the heat. Probably about the same amount of change from each procedure. I did some other insulation as well. You can read everything I did in the "Mods" link in my signature, if you're interested.

Bottom line though, even BEFORE the recall I had eliminated the problems of the boiling gas and associated vapor smell. The hot cramped engine compartment was probably mostly to blame, but the rear cylinder exhaust header "almost touching" the fuel tank, and the hot cat directly underneath it were also to blame. Everything I'd done before got rid of about 80% of the excess heat. AFTER the recall work, all the heat was gone except for a bit of "right foot heat" which is still present.

If you are still having problems after the recall, I'd first recommend speaking with the dealer and having them re-check that everything was done correctly. If problems persist, I believe removing the cat and wrapping or coating all the exhaust lines will indeed make a difference.

I have a plain vanilla '14 RT. (It was a left over after the '15's were out and got a deal. I can farkle my butt off and still 'be ahead'.) Today the air temp was about 102 degrees and I was out riding (I have a Veskimo cooling vest). When I finally got home, the handle bars were incredibly hot. I don't mean blistering, but still quite hot. Uncomfortable to hold hot. Is this part of the heat issues this thread is discussing? I'm having the cat delete pipe installed. Any heat reduction will be appreciated. That catalytic thingy really is large. The delete pipe is really small. So.....

www.veskimo.com is the site. It's not especially cheap but believe me when I say, it is the difference for me whether I ride or stay in the AC at home and well, that's not doing me much good..

And if they call you 'Big Bank Hank' around the office, here's something to look at http://www.gizmag.com/entrosys-motorcycle-airconditioner-review/30585/ New technology from Australia the cools AND heats...

Ooops....

The 14's are not part of the recall nor did they have any of the heat issues. Yours is a new and interesting problem. What part of the handlebars are hot..?? Do you have heated grips..?? Are they on..?? Just wondering..:dontknow: if it is a heat problem let us know what you find out...

Thanks everyone! I am going to keep a close eye on the temp and fuel smell for a week or so. If the problem persists the dealer will be hearing from me. But I am still going to remove the cat and wrap the pipes. It just does not make sense that the cat is even on the bike. Has anyone cut a whole in the fan shroud on the motor side to actually let the fan blow air in to the motor to cool it down more?

My "Better Half" has a 2013 RTL that had significant gas smell and fumes before the recall was completed.

She has put 2,500 plus miles on since being fixed in all kinds of weather and temperature with no fumes or gas smell whatsoever.

It's 102 degrees out. You could touch the handle bars on a Schwinn bike and the bars would be incredibly hot too.

HOT HANDLEBARS

:agree::agree::agree:............I have a 14 RT and my handle bars get Hot also.....But it's not related to the engine.....it's a combination of air TEMP and Sun....................jmho.....Mike

FANS

CYCLERIDER..........If you are looking for fans that will not draw much if any power and will do the job ....plus be small and in-expensive ...check out what they have on E-bay in the computer fan section....look for 12 volt fans ................Mike

NICE ....BUUUUUUUUUT

Thanks Blueknight! Was actually thinking of a spal fan. A 5.2 inch. I would have it come on with the oem fan with a relay.

:lecturef_smilie:............Here's the problem with that ( as I see it ).......the electrical out-put of the magneto may not be enough long term.......The computer fans have a high cu.ft.per minute out-put for the amount of AMPS they need to run them.....They also produce almost NO HEAT.. Which is something you don't need................You want to match the fan to the need, anything over is useless.........just a thought.....Mike

WasWinger. I cut a hole in the same area and used the block off plate. A question though. If you removed that bottom panel, where did they put the new location of the charcoal canister? (after the recall work) Mine is attatched to to that bottom panel, just under where the hole was cut. Which brings up another question. Will the heat from the fan blowing on the new location of the charcoal canister effect anything? The dealer told me they relocated it because it was too close to a heat source. Great pics and work by the way. It looks good! Same color RT as mine.

The recall did not relocate the charcoal canister. It ADDED a filter between the canister and the vent line that is mounted to the bottom plate. My bottom plates were already gone and they mounted the new filter to the lower radiator hose with tywraps.
