Brake Pads..?

New member
I ride a 2014 St Limited. I have just over 15,000km or about 10,000 miles on it
Was out today and got a "Brake Failure" and obviously a low brake fluid warning.
So my questions are:
1...how far did you get on your pads?
2..what brand of pads did you buy and are you happy with them?
Thanks for any info you can supply
:gaah:

Depends....

On mine (RS 2012 manual) I got 32,000 and there was some left. I went with the EBC pads from BajaRon and am very happy with them. Will see how long they last. Now RT's and semi-auto's do not last as long and those who do not use engine compresson for braking also will wear faster. The front one are still fine but have sets to do those when the time comes....

:agree: with Chewy above, on how long they last...... it does of course vary ...... but folks do seem to change a lot sooner than necessary due to Dealer pressure ........ I have a 2014 RT with 27,000 + miles ........I checked them about 5,000 miles ago and decided I would change the rear this winter ..... I will check the fronts again but I doubt they will need them yet....... I have an SE trans and usually let it downshift ..... unless I'm in the twisties ....... Mike

So you got a brake failure warning. Why is it obvious that it is a low brake fluid warning? You may be right. There can be another reason for a brake failure warning.

Why do you think you need new brake pads? Did you measure them? If so which pads are worn out? Front, rear or both. Minimum thickness spec is 1 mm.

I got 50,000 km out of my rear pads and they were worn out. The front were fine but changed them anyway. Replaced with EBC pads.

:dg2:Thanks Mike. I'm in the process in ordering in new pads. Like you said, fronts look ok but my rear pad is quite thin☹️ I guess i'm harder on my brakes than i thought...will down shift manually more from now on.

:dg2:My brake fluid light came on to tell me that my pads are potentially thin. As your pads get worn down, your brake fluid decreases to fill the gap. When i had to pull off the road this morning, it's the first thing i checked was the fluid....and it was very low. Then check my back tire pad and saw how badly worn it was. At times like this, i really appreciate the safety features on our Spyders.
Im just a little concern on how quickly the pads wore out.
My front pads look ok, BTW.
🙂

What site are you getting pads from? All I can find from Bajaron is ebay site.

Yah...we are still looking too. Click on our home page and scroll down to Bajaron and click on their link. Price is $103.00 plus shipping for the set. (Front and back)

OK , glad to see you are into wrenching your Spyder :yes:...... If you still have the OEM pads .... they have " wear " lines on them , if you can still see the lines on the rear Pads, you have more PAD than you think !!!! ....... As far as downshifting being used as a BRAKING helper ...... I don't recommend it, because Brake pads are cheap ...... your DRIVETRAIN isn't ....... people here might say it's OK, but if yours breaks, and you ask those same people to send you a check ..........Well how many checks do you think you will get........ I also agree - get them from BAJARON ........ Mike

Mine lasted 25500+The fronts could have gone another 5000,but the backs were as thin as paper. If I had gone any longer I would have been buying a new disk. Used BajaRon for the EBC pads.

Our previous Spyder, a 2010 RT Manual 5-Speed still had the original pads, front and rear, (57,000 miles) when we traded for our present 2014 RT SE6. My thinking is that one's driving habits will be the major factor in how many miles one can get out of the brake pads.

A whole lot also depends on WHERE you ryde as well as how you ryde!!

There are places where you not only need to use your brakes more, you HAVE to use them more than some other places or you die.... & there are some cities where the ryding's like that too!!
